If nothing else, it's a testament to the worthlessness of most churches today.

If you read the article (you read the article, right?) you will see that people that identify as "practicing Christians" is down from 45% in 2000 to 25% in 2020. The article defines "practicing Christians" as someone who calls oneself a Christian, strongly prioritizing faith and regular church attendance.”

So church attendance is one-third of the definition. Therefore it is incorrect, in fact, misleading, to say that church engagement is down about half since 2020.
