The writer states since the State authorized the marrige was authorized then the Church should have no say. However, the marriage would not be leagal without a state issued licensed. It seems this lady is caught in a catch 22 between a rock and a hard place.

A marriage is three contracts. First between you and God, second between you and your spouce, third between the couple and the state. To be divorsed you have to disolve all three. The second and third are easy to disolve in a court for almost any reason. God put very strict limits on when you can disolve a marrage contract with Him.

I think marriage is a covenant with God ...

The issue with modern divorce is one of contractual law. However, God is not a God of contracts, but He is a God of covenant.

It seems she wants to have her cake and eat it too.

There are states that allow common law marriages. . . there would be no licenses and the state would reognize them as partners.

People tend to forget the "till death due us part" portion of the vows. Even in non-religious ceremonies these words are often spoken. People don't honor those words any more.

What happens when the church says "we will not sanction this divorce"?

What happens when a Church of God DOES sanction a divorce?
