I hope he gets a lot of money. He should never have been even reprimanded, let alone fired.

Did he follow company protocol, or not? If not, then the company can implement it's discipline policy, which they did.

After review, they reversed the decision and offered his job back.

Based on what little we know from the story, it doesn't seem to me He would have a valid claim.

New York is an "at will" employment state. If they offered to pay him from the time he was fired until he refused to come back to work he probably won't prevail.
