Clone a hard drive info:

    I asked awhile back about copying an entire drive, system and all.

    Western digital has a program that just did a fine job. I happened to be using WD drives, but suspect it would work with others as well.

    I used the windows version (top download) at

    I did it so must be fairly easy :laugh:

    Retried my 200 gig that has been running 24/7 for over a year and before that most every day for 14 hours so needs a rest.

    On second thought, don't do it, messed up outlook totally and possibly the registry :tonofbricks: but outlook express still works so not to bad till I can figure it out.

    Not sure I have room enough to store their file on the drives I have.

    Am going to try the dos version of the utility tomorrow, if that don't work will give ghost another try.

    Acronis has a free utility too. I think Seagate is offering it while they work on getting an update for their disk utility program. I haven't used it yet since I have Acronis TrueImage.

    Ok, I just finished setting up my new Western Digital Hard Drive. Initially, I had problems using the DOS version of the Data LifeGuard Tool. So I switch the the Windows version and it worked great.

    Planned Configuration:
    Replace the existing Primary boot hard drive and make the "old" primary a Slave drive.

    Generally speaking this is what I did:

    1. Add the "new" drive configured as the "slave" drive. Ensure you configure the jumper setting correctly and plug the "middle" cable connector into this drive.
    2. Booted up computer into Windows and ran the DataLifeGuard tool.
    3. DataLifeguard set up the drive to include formatting and copying the data and system files (Windows). Ensure you click the option to make it a "boot" drive vs an additional storage drive (non bootable).
    4. After copying, shutdown and the open the computer and make the "new" drive the Primary drive and the "old' drive the Slave drive. This will entail again switching the jumper settings and swapping the IDE cable. Slave is the middle connector and Primary is the end connector. Close everything up.
    5. Power up your computer. It should now "boot" off the "new" hard drive.

    Note:
    1. Before copying files shutdown all applications (Internet Explorer, Outlook and stuff auto loaded into your system tray.
    2. Assuming you bought EIDE hard drive...Use the IDE cable that came with your "boxed" (aka retail) hard drive. If you bought OEM, (hard drive only) make sure you get the correct IDE cable. The newer drive may use the enhanced 40 pin cable which actually has 80 wires in it.
    3. Back up your data before you start. If you don't have a backup system, get one. Data is invaluable....these devices are a must.
