    Pre-season polls are kind of joke really. To a degree you can determine who will be strong and who won't based on talent, roster, schedual etc. But really untile everyone starts playing, there is not real way to determine the rankings.

    Maybe we want to ignore the relevance of pre-season polls, but the fact is that they can put some notions in place that won't go away easily even if it become obvious that a team is over or under rated. But the real trouble is that it takes several games, maybe more than half the season, to evaluate some teams. By then ratings are knee-jerk reactions to how a team has performed.

    You mentioned Texas, and they are probably a good example of a team that definitely doesn't 'gel' until the half-way point. The same seams to be true for Ohio St., which last year lost to Northwestern early and soundly beat Michigan at the end. So, as much hype as that Sept. 10 game between Ohio St. and Texas has gotten, any result is possible and it will not necessarily mean anything about their true quality.

    Good points Alcott.

    I think that everyone is overlooking Iowa in the Big Ten, they have returned a lot of their players from last year.
    -And thats coming from a Michigan fan!

    Ohio State is way overrated, Michigan lost because of defensive inconsistency, somthing that haunts them like a plauge under Lloyd Carr (he has to go in my opinion).

    The Wolveriens could win the Big Ten again this year though, if they score a lot of points of which they have the potential to do with Chad Henne and Michale Hart.

    Lots of schools would love to have the quarterback and runningback talent that MI has this year.
