A friend of mine at church is a CF developer for some type of non-profit. He makes pretty good money, and says there is a high demand for CF programmers. He has been encouraging me to learn it, and I have made a couple of attempts at it, but each time I get into it, I find myself disgusted by it. I have programming experience, some C/C++, PHP, Visual Basic, Perl, and I look at ColdFusion and in my eyes it isn't even a programming language. It seems more like a hodge-podge of scripts piled together for HTML coders to be able to quickly create a database-driven web site. Which is fine, I suppose, but why is it so popular and in demand? Is it merely because it has Macromedia/Adobe behind it?

Exactly. It's like when C came on the scene, then C++. Nowadays, XML and web services are the answer to everyone's problems....

I've had several people tell me to learn CF, but I'll have to take a class to make myself do it.

If I remember the attraction was developing with an MS database and then paying the money to go Oracle . . . when the site needed a real database . . .

Funny . . . Oracle has never been much more expensive than MS - unless you go enterprise . . . and as a DBA - I don't think you need enterprise . . .

    ;)

I guess that makes some sense, it would be easy to switch data sources without having to rewrite a bunch of code.

Linux and windows mainly. I could probably put some solaris together, but I haven't ever used it.

I think thats my problem, I never really figured out what I want to do ;) What would you suggest for a guy in a stagnant IT related job with no particular specialty? I have mainly done phone support for the last nine years or so, hardware troubleshooting, right now I do internet support for hotel guests who can't figure out how to use an ethernet cable.

I have been working on an application to store sermons in a searchable archive, and I have to admit that CF has some nice features. The Verity package included with it is great for a no-hassle search feature.
