Colossians 2:14

Recently a thread presented views on the intended message of Colossians 2:14, this thread starts afresh and presents a simple straightforward view.

Here is how the NASB renders the verse:
having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.

Scripture uses several illustrations to describe the consequence of our sin. One frequently used is death, meaning spiritual separation from God. For example the wages of sin is death. Another illustration is debt, our sins have caused us to owe a debt we cannot repay, and thus when we are redeemed, our debt is paid.

When we consider “sin” we see two aspects, the act or thought and its consequence (the debt incurred.) In our verse the cumulative record of our debts incurred is in view. The record of debt is handwritten, no one else created this debt. Anyone God chooses to put spiritually into Christ has his or her sin burden removed by the washing of regeneration.
