I only have one commentary, and that is Matthew Henry,it is in 6 volumes,and was recommended to me by a Christian book shop owner, who is himself a lay preacher. I can`t compare it with others, but find it a very handy tool.

I have Matthew Henry's commentary also but I like my J. Vernon McGee's Bible Study best because he's so down to earth and to the point.

World's Bible Handbook. King James bible commentary. Matthew Henry.

Don't like to focus on any one particular commentary.

Adam Clarke is my favorite.

He has a lot of historical insight, and generally doesn't skip over the hard passages like some commentators do.

MacArthur is the best, well balanced

Barclay has a great daily Bible study, Great for quotes and priciples when preaching.

The best set I have on the NT is the Hendricksen commentary series by Kistemaker and Hendricksen. Exegetical, yet often has a section at the end that suggests practical application. Reformed. I've never turned to its pages and been disappointed.

Best I've grown to love strictly on the OT is Keil & Delitzsch. Wade through the Latin and Hebrew (in context) and you'll be glad you did.

The Expositor's Bible Commentary is good, though weak because of its dispensationalism. Still, good for any level of user.

Matthew Poole's Bible Commentary (OT & NT) is a steal. Get it from CBD. 3 vols of gold. Brief, but not so brief as to not be expository. Spurgeon said he liked Poole just as much if not more than Matthew Henry. Where Henry gets carried away, Poole doesn't.

I'd give anything if NICOT and NICNT would be completed. Get off your rear, Eerdmans! [IMG]

Yep, that's right.

But I don't know what "exposed" is supposed to mean. He's never held himself out as a Baptist. His doctrine just happens to fit well with Fundamental, Reformed Dispensationalism, so it's no great stretch for some.

I collect those MacAuthor books, too! Ain't that spooky?? Blackbird and the Doctor with the same books on our bookshelves!!!!

Oh, and by the way---some years ago MacAuthor was preaching at the annual Pastor's School at FBC, Jacksonville---we held the Southern Baptist yardstick up next to him while he was preachin'--and he measures up!!!

Not true. MacArthur is baptistic, though his church doesn't have the name "Baptist" in the title.

Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible (1871) Jamieson, Robert; Fausset, A.R.; and Brown, David, (Oak Harbor, WA: Logos Research Systems, Inc.) 1998.

I just like it.

It is hard to limit my response to a single commentary. Nevertheless, I will pick John Brown's Hebrews commentary from Banner of Truth.

Even though this is an older commentary, I find that it answers my questions about the English text, more so than any other.

Andy

p.s. I can't resist listing some runners up:

Moo, Schreiner, Murray, Lloyd-Jones, and Boice on Romans
Blomberg on Matthew
Garland on 2 Corinthians
Thomas on Revelation
Young and Oswalt on Isaiah
Block on Judges/Ruth

Like most of the others, I can't pin it down to one favorite.

I like Matthew Henry;
Jamieson, Faucett and Brown;
Expositors Bible Commentary, (Love the dispensationalism! ;) )
Bible Knowledge Commentary is a good two-volume set

I have also started to use the series published by Holman, edited by Max Anders --> Holman Old Testament Commentary; . Holman New Testament Commentary. It is a teaching commentary with life principles, a teaching outline, applications, and illustrations. - I have one OT and 2 0r 3 NT so far.
