The scene at the Oregon’s Umpqua Community College where at least ten people were shot dead earlier today was a gun-free zone, ensuring that the victims were left defenseless against the killer.

10 people were killed and 20 injured after the gunman opened fire at the Roseburg college campus. According to authorities, the shooter is now in police custody.

A post on the Umpqua Community College website (which is currently down) outlines the fact that the campus was a gun free zone where even water pistols were banned.

“Possession, use, or threatened use of firearms (including but not limited to BB guns, air guns, water pistols, and paint guns) ammunition, explosives, dangerous chemicals, or any other objects as weapons on college property, except as expressly authorized by law or college regulations, is prohibited.

Possession of knives with a blade longer than 4” is prohibited.

Brandishing weapons is prohibited.

Misuse of personal defensive weapons – e.g., pepper spray, etc. is prohibited. The owner is responsible and accountable for any misuse of these devices.”

This means that innumerable responsible people on campus who could have stopped the shooter before he was able to carry out his rampage were prohibited from doing so.

In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the usual suspects have rushed to call for gun control, again proving themselves unable to wait until the bodies are even cold before exploiting the tragedy to push their political agenda.

Piers Morgan waited barely minutes after news of the shooting broke to begin advocating for restrictions on the Second Amendment.

As I recall someone conceal carried on a campus few years back and officials said that he could not - went to the supreme court (OR) and they said the school could not have a rule against concealed carry. The state board of education said that they were going to let each school decide if they wanted concealed carry.

I think some allow and some do not but do not for sure.

The number of dead has been downgrade to 7 last I heard.

Obama used his bully pulpit per usual to call for gun law changes. Spent more time on that than the deaths/wounded I'd guess - seemed like it anyway.

Had the gunman known that there were others with guns there, I doubt he would have done this. This man was only stopped in one way - a gun. I'd love to know if he had his guns legally or illegally.

I always wonder why people say this. It's as though some think that a person who would do something like this is thinking rationally. These folks don't choose to shoot some place up based upon who is carrying a gun.

I would venture that if everybody in these places were standing ready with a gun, these folks would still attempt to do what they do. Granted they probably wouldn't kill as many people. But because they aren't thinking like sane people, they would still attempt to do what they do for whatever reason be it anger, revenge or what have you.

I'd love to know if he had his guns legally or illegally.

And I also don't know why everyone thinks legality is REALLY an issue? Crazy people or people bent on doing something like this will find a way to get a gun or whatever else they need to carry out their agenda.

And I'm not sure I'd want to go to a school where the professors or students are carrying guns. It's just asking for something to go wrong.

We're an open society. You pretty much can't do enough to keep an open college campus safe from stuff like this.

I do wonder if this college has key card entry? I know at my old school ( and the student center and bookstore don't), all of the classroom buildings, dorms, frat houses, sororities etc, all require a student or employee access card to get in.

But even that isn't gonna keep folks completely safe and I understand that nothing will. But more precautions can be put in place.

I just don't know what can be done with college campuses that are open and basically anyone can get onto campus. And when classes change, and you've got this

all over campus, what can you do to stop someone from going on a killing spree?

When was the last time anyone heard of a mass shooting in a place where guns were encouraged?

These folks ABSOLUTELY DO choose to shoot up a place based on who is carrying a gun.

"Extra precautions put in place." The local community college has only $350,000/year for their IT budget. 2/3 of that is spent on software licensing for student registration systems, student and employee administration systems, student learning management systems, additional student instruction software, email, and the network hardware required to make it all run. Not to mention, employee and student-use computers, classroom projectors, interactive TV systems for geographically-separated students, etc.

In the meantime, the state implemented a 5% reduction in funding for all schools; and plans on reducing again next year.

This community college would LOVE to implement some of those "extra" precautions. Mind telling them how they can afford them?

The father of one of the shooting victims in Oregon gave an impassioned account of what happened inside the classroom at Umpqua Community College yesterday, according to his daughter, expressing disbelief that the gunman had as much time as he did to execute students.

The Hannity video was still in darkness; the 2nd one was broad daylight. Most likely, the 1st one was some hours after the shooting, and the situation was still fresh, and emotions and adrenaline were still high. The 2nd one looks/sounds more like what you'd expect after some sleep and time to reflect/discuss.

Note that the two don't necessarily contradict. If I'd been the staff member, I would have prevented Mr. Parker from going out for the same exact reason (keep him from getting shot by SWAT).

I thought that I read somewhere that there was one security guard present, who was unarmed. Makes absolutely no sense to me. Especially with the focus on this type of threat.

My own opinion.
