Compromisers Promoted At Bob Jones University

Twice in the last six months Bob Jones University has given a place of honor to New Evangelical men. In the Spring, Richard Gregory, Pastor of the Byron Center Bible Church in Byron Center, MI, was a featured speaker in the University's Chapel program. Gregory is an active Board member of the IFCA - the group that voted to support ecumenical evangelism in 1969 and harbors the likes of Eddie Dobson and John MacArthur. Gregory also has the Executive Director of the IFCA as a member of his church. Just a month ago on the BJU HomeSat program, "Help At Home Live" Tom Lester, well known Southern Baptist of "Green Acres" fame was an honored guest. The show's host, Gary Moore, welcomed his friend, Tom Lester and honored Tom for his evangelistic "Missionary" efforts in a supposed outreach amongst the Hollywood crowd. Tom Lester, on the Green Acres website is referred to as a "Woman's man." Disgusting! BJIII has been confronted with both of these and adamantly defended them both as "Good Men!"

The discernment left the University on November 12, 1997 at BJJR's homegoing to heaven. What a horrid sight it is to see this school down the tubes. Along with BJ III's active ANTI - KJV position as well.

I can see how this would be troubling to BJU's friends in the Ohio Bible Fellowship. Frankly, I'm not a supporter of the IFCA and if it were up to me I would not have invited Dr. Gregory.

Maybe you could explain how using the KJV as the official classroom and chapel version for the university constitutes an active anti-KJV position. They are anti-KJVO but not anti-KJV.

ummm... it doesn't.

I can see why this might be problematic as well, but that's without knowing anything at all about this man other than what has been artuculated on the original post. Is there even a remote possibility that Dr. Gregory is attempting to galvanize the conservative IFCAers and distance from the progressive wing of that movement by identifying with BJU?

No one is "Bashing" BJU here. I am a LOYAL Graduate of Bob Jones University who is witnessing the incremental destruction of the University that "Once was" in my days there. The calibre of the culture/lifestyle has become so worldly that I will no longer recommend anyone to attend there.

I have personally heard from BJIII in letter concerning these matters that I have addressed in my original post. The "Anti-KJV" position of BJIII is clearly manifested by his production of the two books: "From the mind of God to the mind of man" and "God's Word in our hands." These were the brainchild of BJIII who called together JB Williams to form the committee for the publication of these books.

Surely anyone watching their publication of the "BJU Review" can see their lowering of personal standards and even the "slip up," as BJ III calls it, of honoring the BJ Art Grad for painting the picture of Martin Luther King Jr. in the most recent issue of the Review.

Tom Lester is a member of an apostate denomination that harbors religious liberals in its pulpits and schools. For BJ III to befriend Tom, along with Gary Moore doing the same, is clearly a violation of Biblical Separation. BJ JR would have thrown Gary Moore out on Wade Hampton for such a violation of the Bible!

By the way, since it was mentioned here. The Interracial Dating Ban was removed by BJ III to "Get the media off the back of George Bush" as he stated. However, BJ III lied to Larry King in saying that the rule had not been discussed for "generations." He surely knew full well that he defended it in chapel in 1982-83 and BJ JR brought a series of messages on separation of clothing and tied it in with interracial dating. The rule was also strongly taught in our Bible classes.

BJ III is consumed with ONE thing, IMAGE. Never forget that! He has been focused on that ever since the Supreme Court Case in 1983 and the media portrayed us as a bunch of weird, ultra conservative, right winged wackos. BJ III is still doing all he can to gain the acceptance of the media/world and not to appear to be strange. In so doing, he has sold his birthright for a mess of pottage.

I attended BJU as well. It is ironic and sad to watch the way fundamentalists tear into each other over the issue of separation all in the name of maintaining man-made standards.

The phony secondary separation issue in direct disregard to our Lord's statement that if they are not against us they are for us is truly depressing.

Jesus challenged us to love one another so that the world might know that we are one. Paul challenged the early church in the same way as he mocked them for having to have distinctions among themselves.

Your original post is pathetic. I also could at least respect you a little bit if you had the decency to post your real name as you rip into others.

I am no fan of BJU's abusive separatism either. As for "Biblical separation," you folks don't have a clue. What kind of personality type spends their whole life finding fault with other Bible-believing Christians?

Earnestly contend for the faith once delivered unto the saints. Your intolerance shows a lack of desire to uphold/defend the truth of separation from disobedient brethren. Have you not found fault with me and criticized what I clearly am seeing along with other faithful men AND former faculty of BJ as compromise?

Why don't you contend for the faith and teaching of Jesus?

Intolerance? Read your original post.

Disobedient brethren? Because we follow the Scriptures concerning loving one another and bearing with one another.

Finding fault? Read your original post and take off your bitter-rimmed glasses. Why not look to Jesus and preach the good news and leave your condemnations behind. Read the parable about the wheat and the tares that Jesus preached, and get back to me about whether your original post is out of line.
