    .....

Maybe just a little more info Bigape? :)

Couple of things off top of head, have you got good anti-virus protection? Or have you installed something that didn't agree with it?

As before, is this online or off line or all the time?

    Have you defraged lately?

Like excentric said, I'd defrag and then do a disk cleanup. Have you run your antivirus software recently and is it up-to-date? I know it's overkill, but I run mine every night at 2 am. :tongue3:

Mines run nightly at 3AM. I'd feel better over killing than to let it live long enough to hurt me.

CCleaner will helop ny cleaning a lot of junk in your computer.. Also Clean Up is another great Cleaner Program! I use both of them and I've never had any problems.

I also use Ad Aware Professional, and XoftSpy, both cost me a tad bit of money, but, they're Worth every penny..

Another Free Program is an Anti-Virus called Avast - Home Edition. It works wonderful!

    First-
MSCONFIG (when used with the RUN command) opens up the System Configuration Utility. Most of the stuff in there you don't want to mess with unless you know what you are doing or have detailed instructions.

Click the STARTUP tab. The list that it pulls up is everything that you can choose to start up when Windows does.

Why is all of this stuff in the list? Because every program designer thinks his 'creation' is so indispensible that no one could possibly want it to NOT start up with their computer (yeah, right), so they set it into the list and have it to do just that.

Once you're at the list, look it over and see what all has a check mark. Every program that does starts up when Windows loads... EVERYTIME!

If something is checked, but you don't know what it is, Google it and find out.

Once you have seen what is there, uncheck everything that you don't need or want. Keep your firewall, antivirus, broadband drivers, graphics drivers, whatever you absolutely have to have, but uncheck everythign else.

Once you are done, click APPLY, OK, then reboot.

When your computer starts up, you'll get a grey box about the System Configuration Utility. Check the box about 'Don't run on startup' then OK.

If you had a lot of stuff checked, then your comp ought to start up faster and run more stable.

    Second-
Download and run AdAware, Spybot, and possibly Microsoft Windows Defender.
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/Ad-Aware_SE_Personal_d506.html
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/SpyBot-Search_&_Destroy_d2471.html
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/Microsoft_Windows_Defender_d4466.html
(All are free. Be sure to have each one update itself before you scan. MS Win Defender requires SP2.)

    Third-
Uninstall any unused or unneeded programs you have on your hard drive.
*** After this step or the previous step you may have to repeat the MSCONFIG one. Many programs will replace themselves on the startup list, especially spyware/adware.

    Fourth-
Download and run CCleaner. Use the Cleaner function to clean up the junk on your computer (temp files, cookies, and stuff). Then use the Issues function to clean up your computer's registry.
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/CCleaner_Slim_No_Yahoo_Toolbar_English_d4191.html

    Fifth-
Download and run O&O Defrag to REALLY defragment your hard drive. The free version is great, but the Pro version is worth a lot more than the cost (the Pro has a 30-day trial).
    Free- http://www.majorgeeks.com/O&O_Defrag_2000_Freeware_Edition_d4545.html
    Pro- http://www.majorgeeks.com/O&O_Defrag_Professional_Edition_d809.html

Reboot your computer and see if it cranks up a bit faster, plus it ought to have a lot more zip to it as well.

Sluggish performance can come from a number of factors:
    1) Adware/Spyware/Malware
    2) Virus, worms, trojans
    3) Undeleted temporary files, garbage files
    4) Disk fragmentation
    5) Harmless but useless programs running at startup
    6) Too small a swap file
    7) Too little memory

Download HiJackThis (http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/programs.php), then post the results for someone experienced to evaluate the results.

SpyBot Search & Destroy (http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10122137.html) is also an excellent compliment for AdAware.

    My suggestion:

If you feel comfortable doing it: Format, reinstall OS(s), drivers, and most commonly used programs and files. Install Acronis TrueImage. Create a full backup, and store the image on another drive somewhere. Make incremental backups regularly (automatically if you make it a scheduled task).

Then if you ever get a virus, malware, spyware, slow performance, etc... again, just restore your image. 5 minutes and you are back to normal. I have so much confidence in my backups that I don't run an antivirus, antispyware, etc... You can also create multiple images with different OS's and configurations. 5 minutes sure beats the hours it takes to format, reinstall, and configure an operating system(s).

After following Trotter's Advice in post #9, go to www.majorgeeks.com and download RegScrubXp. It will clean up additional loose ends left behind in your System Registry.

Your PC should run much smoother after following those steps.
