I wonder how many billions the feds will spend on more meddling in people's personal lives?

Another sad day for individual liberty in the United States. :tear:

Congress approves Internet gambling ban bill
By Peter KaplanSat Sep 30, 12:52 AM ET

Most forms of Internet gambling would be banned under a bill that received final U.S. congressional approval early Saturday.

The House of Representatives and Senate approved the measure and sent it to President George W. Bush to sign into law.

Agreed. How hypocritical of them - they gamble with our tax dollars every time they are in session, so to speak. Oh, wait. I take that back. They don't gamble at all, they just throw our tax dollars away for the pork and their own little special interests. :BangHead: Apparently the gaming industry doesn't have a powerful enough lobby in Washington DC yet.... (sigh)

There goes the "theory" of small/limited government. Bush and the republicans lied about their desire to shrink the size of the federal government. I find it interesting that many "conservatives" don't really want small government. They, like the liberals, want a government that is large and that controls various aspects of people's lives. However the conservatives just want that done in a "conservative" way. So I no longer believe republicans when I hear them talk about their desire to see a smaller government. Why? Because they don't really want smaller government. Very few people "really" want smaller government.

So, when did gambling and murder become synonymous?

Tim, I see a big difference in murder and gambling. Murder is something done to another individual, taking away their right to life. Gambling is a passtime that is a private decision. The government cannot protect us from ourselves, nor should it. I don't want them intruding on my personal liberty except where it impacts the rights of others. Personal decisions about how I spend my money is not the government's business, whether I give it to charity, spend it all on myself, or gamble it all away. I am an adult, I don't need nor want, Uncle Sam to be my dad.

We live in a country where cigarette companies are praying on and misleading smokers. But the gambling industry is innocent of any such charges. Irony or hypocracy?

Smoking is also an individual decision that the government should stay out of. Cigarette companies are not preying on or misleading anyone. I remember being offered a puff on a cigarette when I was a young child - under 10 years old - and I refused because I had no desire to inhale smoke into my body. Anyone who claims that he/she didn't understand that inhaling smoke into his/her body was harmful is either stupid or lying.

I am getting real tired of the attitude in this country toward government involvement in personal decisions, that attitude being "If I don't like it, then I want the government to ban it. If I like it, then I want the government to subsidize it."

I care what anyone's personal ideology is - keep your stinking nose out of my personal business 'cause it ain't your business if I do or I don't!

Point seen, but how many families and children have been hurt by gambling? And internet gambling is getting bigger and bigger.

I'm sorry if you don't see it as something that needs controlled... I do.
But, hey that is what is great about America.... all different opinions.

    Tim,

I agree with you. I am guessing that some folks have never experienced or known someone who has experienced the joys of growing up with a parent who routinely blew entire paychecks on gambling while their family suffered in wretched poverty. I know someone just like that. They aren't as concerned with personal liberty as some people on here are.

But when your business starts spillin over into my business, or hurting innocent people, then it becomes my business.

Would you say the same thing about child abuse? I have heard that same line about that subject. And Gambling can lead to spousal and child abuse, I have seen it. Families are destroyed, children are hurt, and more people become dependant on the state. And that becomes my business because my taxes then pay for it....

Who is it that buys lottery tickets? I used to work at a convenience store, it was always the poor that bought them... They would buy food with food stamps, and then $20 worth of lottery tickets, only to lose their money. And have 4 kids that were wearing clothes with holes in them!

Gambling hurts others. And is the lazy man's way of "Gettin rich"
God says to work. Work we should.

I have an idea for all of you butt-in-ski authoritarians/socialists. How about - for starters - if we have the government passing a law about how much sleep you get at night...and about making sure that you eat healthily...and about how often you brush your teeth? All of these could affect you and your families. Poor performance by you in any of these areas could cause major medical bills that could bankrupt your family, or cause you to die early and leave your family destitute.

Or a better idea would be for you folks to take care of your own business and keep your noses out of other folks' business.

    1 Thes. 4:11 (ESV)
and to aspire to live quietly, and to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we instructed you,

Does that mean you could care less about the little children who live in wretched poverty because their parents gamble their whole paychecks away each week? Not surprising for an isolationist to not care about the pain and suffering of others. It isn't a very Christian attitude, however.

    1) Abuse of another person, regardless of age, should never be legal. Gambling is not abuse of another person. Your reach on this subject is why we have Big Nanny government. Remember that your support for regulating other folks' actions because you don't approve of them can very easily be used to regulate personal behavior that you do approve of - even your own. And I bet you would be howling if a behavior you approve of or practice was regulated by the government.

    2) So can having a bad day at work - do you want work banned? So can watching your favorite sports team lose a game - do you want to ban sports? So can not getting enough sleep and waking up in a foul mood - do you want the government to regulate how much sleep everyone gets? I could go on, but you should see the flaw in your argument by now.

    pre-emptive strike:

Someone at some point will answer a question in here by replying,

    "You bet!"

It won't be funny then, either.

    Back to the fight...

It is abuse when another person (the child) is forced to live in wretched poverty because of your addiction to gambling. But hey, that's somebody else's "internal problem" as the immoral isolationists like to say as they turn a blind eye to the suffering of others, thank God it hasn't happened to them for blessing them, and then say it's not my problem and quote the original isolationist "Am I my brother's keeper".

So let's just throw away all of our laws....
    It's nobody's business what I do anyway...

If I decide to gamble, steal, cheat, not wear a seat belt, it is my business. Who cares if it hurts others.... especially children.

It amazes me that Christians will not stand against sin.
I bet there are a lot of Christians out there that gamble as well.

    amazing.

probably the same ones that will vote for a pro choice candidate and claim it is none of their business if a baby is murdered.

God help our souls, and nation... we need it when even the Christians are blinded to the truth.

You authoritarians/socialists are the reason this country is in the shape it is in today - with our country heading for bankruptcy(the government has to pay for these regulatory actions, you know) and the government reaching into every knook and cranny of our personal lives.

I got news for you authoritarians/socialists - whenever I hear anyone talk about giving the government more power "for the children" then I know that either my wallet is going to be invaded or my freedom is going to be diminished. Whenever you folks achieve a society where children are totally protected it will be a society where adults have no freedom. I have some more news for you folks - the government can never, ever totally eliminate risks regardless of how many stupid laws you have them pass. All the government can do is take away freedom without making things better - not even "for the children". You folks are making a Faustian deal with the government. Mark me and mark me well - you will rue the day that you did so.
