Congressman Ron Paul: Responding to Katrina

Those are some good questions and comments for Congressman Ron Paul!

 

Ron Paul will be speaking at the JBS seminar in Orlando next month, I may see if I can get some tickets to the event.

 

He objects to the "from the top down" approach to rebuilding and helping the victims and so do I.

But when the hurricane struck, that's exactly the approach that the governor and the mayor wanted to use.

They washed their hands of their responsibilities and depended on FEMA to do things they were never set upto do, such as take over the responsibilities of what should be first responder duties.

It can't work both ways and we all know it.

 

I agree. The reconstruction should be handled from the bottom up.

However, we can expect a cry for more federal administrative or statutory law to expand the responsibility and power of the federal government so this "national shame" - the media name applied to this natural disaster - will "never happen again".

It will be a difficult fight to convince people that these problems should be handled by the citizens themselves, their own city, the own parish or county, and their own state before the federal government is involved and, even then, the federal role should be very limited.

 

The whole movement is toward nationalism. This is just another, though very big, step.

 

If Portland Oregon were to lose a bunch of downtown buildings, do to an earthquake, they will expect for the costs of repair or replacement incurred by these privately owned buildings to not be born by themselves or their insurance companies, nor by the city or state, but ultimately by the federal government, so that the costs may be divied up among the multitude. It was an act of God, you see, and many people lost their lives or were displaced.

 

Here we go!

Bush Speech to Push Aid Package

This disaster will set a new prescedent in what's expected - demanded - from the federal government.

Racial intimidation will play a large role in the politics of what's done.

 

Let's say for the sake of illustration, that this current disaster costs us federally 200 Billion. Now were ostensibly going to pay for it with reduced highway budgets, cutting pork, etc. Forever establishing the Fed, as the golden goose.

OK, lets say, LA and San Francisco are hit with devastating earthquakes, the damage of which costs 5 Trillion. A month later the entire eastern seaboard is hit with a tsunami, damage estimates 15 trillion.

The demands are going to be just a strident as today. The golden goose is going to be a little short.

 

Exactly! Further, this "golden goose" is not going to lay any "free" eggs. Every last one of them is coming with a set of federal controls that will strongly favor those who believe in the goose. The goose will demand much feed and that will be the role of everyone of us whether we like it or not.
