What is conviction? And how do you know you are under conviction?
We've been seeing a lot of discussion lately people mentioning conviction, I thought it might be good to find out what people belieive it means.

The holy spirit convicts through God's word, that is the only way to know God's Truth. It can not be based on a *feeling*--feelings are deceiving. Conviction comes to me when I read scripture and I see how I am wrong or sinful(in my attitudes and actions),then hopefully,I repent right away.

When convicted I see that I am wrong, repent, then live the change.

conviction is like trying to sweep the floor in the dark and then a lightbulb turns on and you can see that you've been doing it wrong and so you change. [IMG]

Usually, it happens when I'm reading something in the Bible that I've read hundreds of times, but suddenly I understand in a new way what I'm to do.

    katie,
This is a great topic. Remember when the Pharisees accused the woman of adultery and Jesus answered, "He that is without sin among you,let him cast the first stone." The Bible word convicted comes from a few verses following that.
John 8:9, "And they which heard it, being CONVICTED by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last; and JESUS was left alone and the woman standing in the midst."
SO, it seems to indicate that when we hear the Word we can become convicted.

Convict: To prove guilty. Y'all have given some fine examples of "self-conviction."

Conviction to me is when I start sinking into the pew during the sermon. :D Oh yeah and sometimes it kind of feels like a lightning bolt might feel when going through ones heart!
[IMG] But it also feels good and makes me take action. Thank you Father!
    Love in Christ Angie [IMG]

Conviction by God will make a change in my life.

Conviction by emotional/psychological manipulation by a pulpiteer will not.

Taught a psychology of counseling class dealing with "false guilt". Quite a phenomena in ifb circles.

Sad. See it here on the BB on occasion, too. [IMG]

Would like to hear more about "false guilt"

Would you start a thread on this or have you discussed it before?

    This is great Suzanne [IMG]
Isn't it amazing how one can read and read a scripture and all of a sudden we can understand the meaning. The Holy Spirit does that for us.

    God is so Great!!

    Good description Adam.

Funny how so many say it comes from only reading scripture, yet they try to be the one who ocnvicts others into doing what they do and do it their way.

    Katie,
We cannot possibly convict anyone, but we can teach them. Titus 2:3-5 gives the admonition for older women to teach the younger. Teaching is different from convicting. The Holy Spirit is the only one who can convict, however women are to teach other women how to love their husbands and children.
Also when one is having a debate they will try to use persuasive language to prove their point. This too is different from convicting.

I think it goes past teaching when a person is told they either don't love God enough, or aren't obedient according to you, they just aren't as spiritual. My teachers never taught me like that in school. I wonder if thats how the home schoolers on the BB teach their children, let them know they are worthless failures, and not acceptable. Well if it isn't how you teach your children, what makes you think you can teach anyone else like that?(and is this really biblical anyway, I think not) And since you don't know me, or anyting about me, anything you can do to try and teach me(especially the put down method) anything is going to be inadiqut. If I want to learn form someone other then the bible, then I'll ask someone I know and trust.

Again, please do quote where I have accused you of, in your words, being not acceptable, don't love God and are not as spiritual. I am very open to seeing where I have written this, please show me.

And now you have accused me of teaching my children that they are worthless failures. So, it wasn't enough to accuse me of adding to the PERFECT WORK OF JESUS MY SAVIOR BY CALLING ME A LEGALIST. NOW, YOU ARE ACCUSING ME OF TEACHING MY OWN CHILDREN THAT THEY ARE WORTHLESS. GEE, THANKS.

Actually, I am blessed and I praise God for that. I hope that you have a wonderful day and much peace from the Lord today. Jesus loves you so much.

Your constant attitude says it to me and others. When you say a biblical women, a woman who obeys God, or say that when someone else(not you, but anyone else) wears pants, or doesn't cover their head they are disobeying.

No, I did not say that. I asked if thats how homeschoolers teach their children, the way you teach on the BB(asking about yur teaching methods). Thats what I said, I asked a question. Becasue if you don't teach your children that way, why would you try and teach anyone else like that? Thast what I really said. If your going to quote me you could at least do it right.

Here is a quote from a book that I think is very full of wisdom om guidance, which most churches teach that we can *feel* God's guidance,it was something I had always been taught, too. But after study and seeing how God's word does cover so much,we do not have to depend on feelings or our conscince in the areas of guidance or conviction,or decision making....

Martha Peace's "Attitudes of a Trnsformed Heart"

"When we consider how God guides us,we also must remember that our hearts decieve us. We are capable of believing and feeling that God is guiding us when really our consciences may have been taught error instead of Truth. What we feel we desire to do is simply that-our feeling. It is possible to have a feeling and think God is leading us when what we really have is an idol perhaps of controlling others or fear of man, instead of God. The only for sure way to know God's will is to go to scripture.

It is a mark of maturity as a christian to honor God by relying on what we *know for sure* rather than depending upon other methods of guidance which at the very best are unsure and dependent upon using scripture out of context. None of us can be transformed in our thinking if we are out of His will. The only way to know His will *for sure* is to ebrace a biblical view of guidance and to trust God's word and His providence instead of trusting some vague, mysterious impression,"check",or still small voice that we think we heard or felt. If we are to be renewed in our thinking and attitudes then it follows that we must "not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is..."Eph 5:17."

I know I have been guilty of listening to my feelings....I know this is not typical SBC teaching, but if you think about how many times you have heard someone say,I feel led to do this,or I don't feel like this is the right thing....if it is not based on scritpure,it coiuld be your heart decieving you. So,I trust scripture for convicting....

I really think instead of fighting all the time with those you don't agree with, maybe it would be helpful to you(you as in anyone) to have a teachable spirit, agree and learn when you can,and disagree when you see that it is not what scripture is teaching....please do not be so critical of those who post things(it seems so personal with you),if you don't agree then fine, noone says you have to...but,there is no reason to be so personal and defensive towards brother and sisters in Christ. Noone is trying to correct you at all....I'm just posting what I have learned and I love God's word and love to share it....noone has said you are a failure, noone has said you are wrong...maybe some diasgree on topics, but that is what the BB is about. Sharing and growing together,so that we can become pre Christ-like. Believe me,I would prefer for everyone to be more like-minded,but it is not like that. But,if those want to post their thoughts or what they have learned,it is fine to do so. I would like to encourage everyone to do that.

Can we all be a little more sweet spirited towards eachother? Please?

There is an old saying that when we point a finger at others, we have three coming back at ourselves and a thumb pointing to God.

We ought to hear ourselves when we speak, and refrain from pointing fingers. Please stick with the subject and not get personal. This applies to everyone. So, let us take the mind of Christ and think, or even take a deep breath before we type a response to what appears to be a personal attack.

    Thanking you all in advance,

    Cheers,
