I wanted to share something with the BBS that is going on in my community. Namely, there are several churches that are working together to reach the community for Christ. The amazing thing (and this is a real blessing) is that this is a cooperative effort between baptist churches. Two (one of them mine) are SBC and the other is Independant.

I have always thought it a tragedy that IFBs and SBCer's seemingly weren't able to fellowship. But in this case, the spirit of cooperation has been (and still is) a real blessing. Are there differences in church polity and the way we apply certain scripture? Absolutely. But we have realized that our calling is the same, and we've begun working together - overcoming the spirit of dissension.

Are there any other pastors out there who have experienced this kind of cooperation and unity among differing baptist churches?

Praise the Lord... I will pray that the Lord willl multiply the efforts and really bless your area with this endeavor.

Truthfully, no. We cannot get the IFBers in our area to work with us on anything. We (the SBC churches) fought last year against the lottery in TN and against the largest porno store in the state opening in our county. the IFBs were nowhere to be found. SOme, in fact, supported both buying into the world's argument about helping the economy and so on.

Partly, it's a relief. They are so skewed on their understanding of the Word and salvation, it would probably only make matters worse. But I've seen this in every area I've served.

People care too much about what divides us than caring about the Lord that unites us.

I've seen the divide also. That's why I feel so blessed in my present circumstance.

Can't imagine a scenario where the independent Baptists in our city would cooperate with ANY other group. Unofficially they will on issues like pro-life, but real "church-y" type activities? Nada.

Our 9 ifb churches have very little cooperation and NO joint projects. 3 of the churches (one of which I pastored) are in league with a camp, and have had tri-church sings or picnics.

But even these have dwindled. "Independent" is the operative word. Grrr.
