Coronavirus Is the Health of the State

“Coronavirus will leave behind a residue of laws, spending, and precedents for future government actions. That's because of what Higgs calls the "ratchet effect," by which the aftermath of each crisis sees government shrink a little, but never back to its pre-crisis status. "Thus, crisis typically has produced not just a temporarily bigger government but also permanently bigger government," he wrote.”

We have been in that pattern of ever-increasing government size since 1932 and the New Deal of FDR. It is time to get over it and start drastically reducing the size of government.

I think it really started during the War of Southern Independence.- maybe not a whole lot - but that small snowball got rolling down the mountain..................

Yes, but the southern Democrats came to power in 1932 and people like Landrau in Louisiana just recently lost power. Now white suburban women vote for big government and high taxes because Democrats control American institutions. The GOP of Lincoln was not a globalist party but they were forced to build up the military and other services to subsidize the West, where the wars with the childish savages continued until the end of the 19th century when the military finally waged total war at the urging of Sherman and Sheridan. By the beginning of the 20th century we were a world power.

President Coolidge tried to put the federal government on a solid financial footing and Hoover was a highly successful engineer and businessman but only loosely connected to the GOP which went protectionist. President Reagan tried to cut the size of government but failed.

And now we get casinos. Probably would have had a better market and economy if the tribes had been allowed to be full fledged citizens. Medicine instead of European was already here. No sense in re-inventing it all. We already had it and grew it. But we killed it all and wiped it all out. Native Americans are the same family as the Koreans. If we had incorporated them, we would be light years ahead of China.
