I recently read a post somewhere on this board that brought up the idea that most KJVo Pastors/Preachers correct the KJV translation on the fly while preaching without even realizing it. I was thinking that it would be interesting just to see how much truth is actually in that statement. I decided to keep track during this past Sunday's morning and evening service. I'll place my remarks below, however I would like to see if any body else would like to try this so that we can compile our results. To give a little background on my church: I love the assembly that God has called me to be a member of. I attend a church that is pretty much KJVO.

My Results...

The topic was stewardship

Proof texts used were I Cor 10:26, II Cor 5:1 - 5:5, Eph 5:16, James 4:13, and Matthew 25:26-27

The Bible I used was an NASB/NIV Parallel.

In I Cor 10:26
KJV reads "the fulness thereof"
Pastor said "this means 'all it contains'"
NASB reads "ALL IT CONTAINS"

In II Cor 5:1
KJV reads "tabernacle"
Pastor said "this simply means tent"
NASB reads "tent"

In II Cor 5:4
KJV reads "tabernacle"
Pastor said "or tent"
NASB reads "tent"

In II Cor 5:5
KJV reads "wrought"
Pastor said "this means He prepared"
NASB reads "prepared"

In Eph 5:16
KJV reads "Redeeming"
Pastor said "this says that we need to make the most of"
NASB reads "making the most of"

James 4:13
KJV reads "Go to now"
Pastor said "this is like saying today Come on now"
NASB reads "Come now"

Matthew 25:26
KJV reads "slothful"
Pastor said "Its saying that this slave was lazy"
NASB reads "lazy"

Matthew 25:27
KJV reads "exchangers...usury"
Pastor said "it says he should have put it in the bank so that he could at least get interest"
NASB reads "bank...interest"

Finally
I Cor 6:20
KJV reads "therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are Gods:
NASB reads " therefore glorify God in your body (rest is ommitted without a footnote???)

In all 10 verses with 9 corrections and 1 partial omission.

I'm also attending for the fourth year straight a distance education laymens Bible institute called Faith Bible Institute out of Rowland Road Baptist Church in Louisianna. I tried to use the same method I used on Sunday, but the speed of the class is such that its all you can do just to keep up with the notes.

However a few I found

In Ruth 2:3
KJV reads "hap"
Prof said "means she happened"
NASB reads "she happened"

OH this one is good

Ruth 3:9
KJV reads: "spread thy skirt over thine handmaid"
Prof wrote:"The phrase 'spread thy skirt over thine handmaid' is a request for Boaz to assume her care. The Hebrew word translated skirt is literally edge or wing of thy garment, reminding him of his earlier words praising her for trusting God and coming under his wings"
NASB reads: "spread your covering over your maid"
NIV reads: "spread the corner of your garment over me"

That stinks ... I thought I had actually found a proof text allowing me to try on my wife's dresses. jussssssst kiddddinnnnnggg

In Gal 2:17
KJV reads "minister of sin"
Prof said "Paul's answer was that this would make Christ a promoter of sin"
NASB reads "promotes sin"

In Gal 2:21
KJV reads "frustrate"
Prof said multiple synonyms including "set aside"
NIV reads "set aside"

In Gal 2:21
KJV reads "Christ is dead in vain"
Prof said "then Christ died for nothing"
NIV reads "Christ died for nothing"

In Gal 3:7-9
KJV reads "heathen"
Prof said "He was told by God that the Gentiles would also be saved by faith"
NIV reads "Gentiles"

LAST ONE
In Gal 3:26
KJV reads "children"
Prof said " We are now the 'children' literally adult sons of God by faith in Christ
NASB reads "sons"

Tee Hee!

My paster usually reads from a modern version (MV).
But having been in the ministry over 40 years,
he will say things like "here the KJV says _____ " [IMG]

I suspect the Pastor is a closet NASB'er!

Thanks Ed, was going to post the same idea while reading the OP. Many times I have heard MV preachers read a verse, then use a phrase like, "another way of saying this, or the KJV says..."

This post is going to do wonders for my already dodgy reputation on this board. [IMG]

"Ruth 3:9
KJV reads: "spread thy skirt over thine handmaid""
"
I'm surprised the professor neglected to mention the very strong sexual connotations of this verse. Naomi has snuck up on Boaz while he was sleeping pulled up all of his clothing and snuggled up next to him. When the poor fool wakes up and notices this, she suggests another round of lovemaking to him. After which old boaz feels extremely flattered, ignores the fact that he doesn't remember any mad passionate... (well you know) between them and suggests a marriage, which was what Naomi was after all along.

Ruth 3:9 And he said, Who art thou? And she answered, I am Ruth thine handmaid: spread therefore thy skirt over thine handmaid; for thou art a near kinsman.

I could not help but laugh as I read again this totally absurd translation of this verse. It makes the Bible sound more like one of Shakespeare’s works of fiction than a true story. Any pastor who preaches from the KJV and does not correct it as he preaches from it <crude attack deleted>

As I've said many times, the KJV is Good news for 17th Century man. It was the most modern English version of 400 years ago.

Dr. J. Vernon Mc Gee often did such correcting and clarifications in his famous radio studies of the complete Bible. He used the KJV only because it was the version with which he'd grown up, and didn't hesitate to say so or point out what he believed were poor renderings in the KJV. And this man was no piker in Bible knowledge.

This is the most ludicrous exegesis of a verse of Scripture that I have ever heard of. If that is what you have been taught, then you have been taught very wrongly. I'd seriously consider another church.

Failure to understand the traditons of that time helps to render falsehoods such as yours.

Ruth was NOT acting sexually, her actions were nothing more than submitting to Boaz as a handmaid, not as a woman of ill-repute.

The mention of what Ruth did, Boaz's skirt exactly translated, goes much deeper than the sensuous mentality that perverts much of Scripture today, and we tend to think modernism has done little to help in that perversion! [IMG]

So what if it does? You don't believe the Bible? To compare the KJB with Shakespeare doesn't do the Scripture harm, those who know the period of time to be the highest in English literature in excellence know that would be more a compliment than an insult, but considering the illiteracy running so rampant today, not surprised at your post, no, not at all. And to think, Shaespeare used to be considered educational reading, now it is said to be "too hard to understand"?!?

Pastors have an obligation both to God and to their congregation use preach to them using the most accurate translation available to them. Those pastors who refuse to do so, and insist upon use a translation that has been proven to be both terribly out of date and riddled with errors shall answer to God, not to me.

I love both the brethren and the sinner enough to use the most accurate translation available to me and to warn others of the consequences of using a 400-year-old translation of the Bible that is more out of date than a horse and buggy by 300 years!

Ok Craig my friend, I'll bite. Give me a "consequence".
Try me. But first, you need to repent of your ungodly statement.

I could, of course, post hundreds of thousands of very well documented consequences, but since you asked for only one, here it is:

1. Eternity in hell. The King James translation of the Bible is <attack on specific Bible version deleted>
