After a discussion on Facebook last night about a couple of gospel song quizzes, I tried to create a quiz that relates more to songs sung in country churches like I grew up in -- especially churches that sang out of Stamps-Baxter hymnals like Heavenly Highway Hymns.

I tried to strike a fine line between not too easy and not too difficult. Not sure I accomplished that, and that may depend a great deal on what your personal experience is anyway. Here's the link:

(I have never tried to build a quiz like this before. Would appreciate your feedback.)

I got 67%. I think you had a good balance.

Thanks, Stefan. I tried to strike a balance between knowledge of older hymns and gospel songs, with some knowledge of the books (particularly Heavenly Highway Hymns, which has been most popular in my area) and composers. It is hard to perceive what others will know about such a topic, but I figured there are those out there for whom the quiz would fit. Those involved in the Facebook discussion liked it.

When I was in college, I served in a very small country church that sang out of the Heavenly Highway Hymnal (2nd ed.), so I recognized a lot of the ones that I missed, too.

I especially was fond of the reference to the prayer wheel. A member of the congregation would always during "Just a Little Talk with Jesus" sing "it makes it right" waaaaaaaaaaaaay off key. It always brought a smile to my face, and I think of those days every time I hear the song or a reference to it.

I probably should have clarified first edition, but hardly every think of the second edition. I think I've only ever attended one church that used the second edition.

Out of curiosity what area were you in where they used it? From what I hear from others it may have used not only in country churches across the south, but on in the uplands and maybe midwest as well.

Northeast Arkansas, just outside a small town of a few hundred people.

I only got 53%. Of course I didn't know the editor of the hymnal, but surprising I got the page number for Amazing Grace correct (guessed). I got "It is Well With My Soul" question incorrect, and also missed the "Ain't" question. I got one of the author questions wrong.

Interesting. figured a lot of people who guessed on "Amazing Grave" would have guessed number one, thinking that it was on the first page. The first two numbers -- 310 and 203 -- were the numbers of it in the two books we used, Favorite Songs & Hymns and Heavenly Highway Hymns, respectively. When those numbers were called we knew what we would be singing, and most people didn't bother to get the book since they knew it by heart. "Ain't It A Shame" is one song that slipped by close editorial review (and not because of the word "Ain't").

'Ain't It a Shame' is one of those folksy type songs where you can sing the same thing but change a word or two in each stanza to change the song as you go along. A long time ago, on one of those Sunday nights when folks call out songs to sing, someone called out this one. In all my life I had never heard it, and have never heard it since.

    Stanza 1
Ain't it a shame to work on Sunday
    Ain't it a shame (a workin' shame)
    (REPEAT)
Ain't it a same to work on Sunday

    CHORUS:
When you've got Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday
And you've got Thursday, Friday, Saturday
    Ain't it a shame?

    Stanza 2
Ain’t it a shame to joy ride Sunday,
Ain’t it a shame (a joy ridin’ shame)
    (REPEAT)
Ain’t it a shame to joy ride Sunday.

    CHORUS:

    Stanza 3
Ain't it a shame to lie on Sunday
    Ain't it a shame (a lyin' shame)
    (REPEAT)
Ain't it a shame to lie on Sunday.

Now wait for it, the chorus:
When you've got Monday Tuesday Wednesday
And you've got Thursday Friday Saturday
    Ain't it a shame?

    Stanza 4
Ain’t it a shame to gossip on Sunday,
    Ain’t it a shame (a gossiping shame)
    (REPEAT)
Ain’t it a shame to gossip on Sunday.

    CHORUS:

So, we made it nicely through the first two stanzas. I was sitting on the front row and participating loudly when we came to the chorus of the third. I burst out in laughter when it hit me what we were singing. That effectively killed the rest of the song and we talked about it a bit, then moved on to the next song.
