My friend who was a missionary and pastor in the Philippines said that until fairly recent times, the Philippines were Catholic and untouched by protestantism, Thus the most outlandish Catholic ppractices were considered normal People flog themselves in through the streets as well.

Devotees nailed to crosses on Good Friday in Philippines

Very sad. What is the history of this practice?

What is the Pope's response?

Found this article giving more insight into the practice.
Philippines Crucifies Nine to Observe Good Friday

This practice has been condemned by the Vatican on numerous occasions. To allow or encourage it is to sanction disobedience!

No question that Philippines is overwhelmingly a Catholic nation. But, that doesn't mean that these are Catholic practices. They are, in fact, strongly condemned by the Catholic Church. When I lived in California, my next door neighbor was a Baptist Sunday School teacher. She was also a wiccan. Does that mean Wicca is a Baptist practice?

Okay, so they get crucified - do they get a good scourging too? After all, you can't have one without the other.

Protestant church in Ohio in the news this week:

Pastor asks students to cut him, spit on him
the pastor asked the students to cut him. "He's like I don't want you to go crazy with it but I do want you to slice it down my back and make me bleed," said student Ai'janae Parker. She stated that the pastor told kids to spit in his face and slap him as a part of their Easter lesson. "I thought it was pretty weird. I didn't like it all," said Parker.

Totally misplaced.

I do feel for them because it indicates they do not yet understand the Blood Atonement of Jesus Christ.

Why try to reenact the impossible?

The Vatican frowns on it. Folk religion

Shouldn't practicing folk religion within the RCC deserve discipline? Fifty hale Mary's and a couple of Rosary's? (I might have that backwards). If it could be considered heresy, maybe a stretch on the ole rack for old-times sake.

That's the problem: we've all stopped burning and hanging people for getting it wrong in our eyes when it comes to religion. I blame you Baptists: it was all ok before you came along and taught us tolerance and pluralism; now you can't go to a good burning for love or money

One if the things which drew me to the Baptists was there non-involvement in torture and mayhem.

I guess whipping the hide off the backs of the slaves that didn't pick cotton fast enough would not count as torture? Why did the SBC apologize for just that reason then?

Proof please.

Usually, Hank, when I provide proof of Baptist 'bad' behavior, you respond with 'well, nothing compares to what the Catholic Church did!'. When I gave you the link for the Protestant Inquisition which documented hundreds of thousands burned at the stake by Protestants you said you didn't need to read it, you had done your own research. Oh, and the hooey about how Baptists are not 'really Protestants', an idea to which intellectually honest Baptist historians snicker.

There is plenty of proof that Baptists owned slaves, whipped slaves brutally, considered them livestock, etc. but I suspect that you will say 'it is nothing compared to the Catholics'. Anyway, here is some info for you:

Yes, the Civil War Was About Slavery | Baptists and the American Civil War: In Their Own Words

BTW, why would the SBC apologize for the involvement of Baptists in slavery and why was the SBC started? Here is a hint:

OK Like I said I used a comparative term.

Personally I am of Italian-Jewish inheritance. All my ancestors arrived after the Civil war.
To me the RCC church proved her origin with the ocean of blood she has shed.

I don't blame the innocent laity.
