We got an email about toothpaste being sold at Dollar General and other discount stores that is being made in Mexico. Checking a brand new tube of CREST toothpaste sitting on the sink, I read the label only to discover it is "distributed" by Proctor & Gamble, but Made in Mexico.

It is going in the trash after I call the 800# on the back today: 1-800-699-3974 for answers to my questions.

Today, it is back to the old baking soda Made in the USA until I can get to the store to replace CREST with extra whitening and tartar protection, Clean Mint.

I have a problem with putting things in my mouth that have been made in third world countries.

    </font>
    • Are food/ingestible items Made in Mexico under the US FDA scrutiny? (Probably not)</font>
    • What water is being used in these products? Probably not bottled water, because that would be an extra expense and the whole idea of NAFTA and CAFTA and FTAA is for these large US corporations is to cut expenses (including labor). Ever heard of Montezuma's revenge? Is there CLEAN, treated water being used in these products from third world countries?</font>
    • What checks are there on vermin (roaches, mice, rats, etc.), lead, bacteria, pesticides, chemicals, sanitation, etc., on food/ingestibles made in third world countries? Probably not many.</font>
    • The BIG question I have about all of this - Is Public Health in the US at risk?</font>
    • What pathogens/poisons/or other undesirable items are in these products or could potentially be in these products?</font>
    • Is this an open door to possible terror attacks through what we consume?</font>
But if anyone can guarantee me that all these products meet US FDA standards and regulations, then perhaps I'll change my mind. I think this is a BIG SHAM that has been forced on the American people by their elected officials which they don't even know about - these trade deals - and ultimately is putting the American public at risk when it comes to food and other items we consume.

I am learning not to trust BRAND NAMES - because their bottom line is all the same - GREED - (at any cost?).

This thread will serve as a list of ordinary items that Americans eat/consume/or otherwise put in their mouths so that we can be aware and use our purchasing power to send a message to P&G and other corporations and this administration and Congress - we will not continue to be "snookered" by their Free Trade Policies.

If you start reading labels on the products you consume and find products that say Made in Mexico or Product of Mexico - please feel free to list them here.

    Thanks,
    Lady Eagle

This thread is about consumable items, TP. Try not to "fret" about it. [IMG]

Same old tune - only America cna do it right :( .

Amazing, in many countries in Europe folks refuse to consume products made in America because of the lack of controls.

I mentioned the business of foreign toothpaste to my dentist (in speaking strictly about flouride only), he said that high levels of flouride (spelling!!??) is bad for children but harmless for adults. His reasoning is that adults are done growin' teeth.

Country of Origin must be strictly labelled, I notice my tooth pastes don't indicate the Country of Origin on CREST, but just have distributed by Canadian Crest. Now I suspect it comes from Mexico. If concumers knew it and bought it, then it is OK, but otherwise, if consumers were misguided to regard it as coming from US, then there was a cheating in sales tech. Problem is that such tricky method is done by US companies themselves as they import a lot from China.

[IMG] [IMG] I am suddenly getting a series of scenes from The Simpsons running though my head...A character picks up something with "Made With Pride In The U.S.A." or similar written on it, and the object either doesn't work, breaks, or explodes [IMG] :D

But hey if you want a REAL nasty shock take a walk into the kitchen of anywhere from your local McDonalds up to a place so posh all of us combined wouldn't be able to afford it and play "Count the cockroaches" :D

LadyEagle does have a point. Most cheap toothpastes that are sold in dollar stores are foreign made and do NOT have the seal of approval by the ADA. If they do not have this, then they could be extra high in flouride (to the point of almost being poisonous) and often even their texture is different.

If it does contain the seal of ADA, ragardless of what country it is made in, then it is okay to use.

This is a very important issue because they are also not controlled by the FDA, although they should be.

Thanks, Phillip. My point is that we aren't sure what kind of sanitary conditions these products are manufactured under because there are no US FDA inspectors on site.

We don't know if these products contain pathogens, bacteria, lead, or other substances that have been regulated and are scrutinized in the USA. The water in Mexico is not generally safe to drink - travelers there are cautioned to drink bottled water - and therefore, why must we assume that the water put into toothpaste as part of the manufacturing process and other products we consume from there is any better?

People can poke fun and laugh at me all they want to. But next time someone gets a GI infection (Montezuma's revenge aka E. Coli) that just about does you in (you won't be laughing then), with multiple trips to the restroom, at least question whether it might have come from a simple thing like the toothpaste you bought under an American brand name (CREST, for instance) that was Made in Mexico - a third world country.

I wish I had the money - I would gather up several of these products and take them to a laboratory for testing and analysis for chemicals, pesticides, bacteria, and other pathogens. Today it might not be an issue. Tomorrow, it might be. Believe me, if I can think of potential issues about our food chain supply, so can the terrorists.

"Same old tune - only America cna do it right"

Mexico has been built on the backs of middle class Americans. Without them, it would be a third world country.

"Americans are the biggest investors in Mexico, further evidence of NAFTA pulling the two countries together. Since 1994, the U.S. has accounted for 62 percent of all foreign direct investment in Mexico."

    http://www.dallasfed.org/research/swe/2006/swe0601c.html

These statistics don't reflect the "undocumented" money that has flowed into mexico for years.

"Amazing, in many countries in Europe folks refuse to consume products made in America because of the lack of controls."

Europeans aren't big consumers of mexican products.

"The U.S. is Mexico’s top trading partner by far. About 88 percent of Mexico’s exports go to the U.S., and 56 percent of its imports come from U.S. sources."

    http://www.dallasfed.org/research/swe/2006/swe0601c.html

"Food distribution in Mexico is highly fragmented, mixing traditional distribution methods and emerging, more sophisticated ones. Only a few companies (mostly large multinational and Mexican companies) have significant control of their entire distribution chain. Though the system is
gradually streamlining and increasing in efficiency, the distribution process today still relies heavily on multiple layers of intermediaries"

According to the 800 #, Crest toothpaste is made in the P&G owned plant in Naucalpan, Mexico. I was given verbal assurances the water used in this product is clean and that everything meets FDA and EPA regulations. I asked for written documentation and was told they would send that to me and said they were sorry I am disappointed in the product. Disappointed? I told them I am more than disappointed, I am disgusted. Meanwhile, a search on the web shows FDA disapproval on Vicks Vapor Rub from P&G at the Naucalpan plant in late 2005 and also that an active petition is going on about P&G conducting animal testing. But that is another thread. [IMG]

I thought America was built on the backs of illegal immigrants from Mexico? Just kidding, honest.

I do not want to be contentious, but it does seem a little bit like every one is over reacting with this. Your average McDonalds is probably more of a threat then toothpaste made in Mexico.

Just a foreigners’ view on it. [IMG]

I feel safe with UK and Canadian products, as well. It's the third world countries that use human waste for fertilizer, etc., that I have major health issues with. They aren't called third world countries for nothin'

In Canada, all foreign products must be labelled as such. Only items manufactured in Canada do not require a country of origin.

We have some very strict regulations on manufacturing, and often exceed US standards, but both are sold in Canada and we buy...generally the cheapest.

A sidenote: We use human waste as fertilizer in Canada. In fact, it is safer than animal waste taken straight from the barnyard and spread on the fields. Human waste is processed and tested. Animal waste is not.

Sometimes we worry about nothing, Eagle.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Thanks...I don't know much about Mexico, to be honest. I know I don't ever want to go there. I do know they manufacture the original VW beetle and I would love to have that here in Canada...

    Cheers,

    Jim
