The discovery of large quantities of petroleum in Cuban offshore areas is drawing oil companies from around the world, including China, Canada and Spain. Is it time to drop the embargo on trade with Cuba to access such close petroleum reserves? The embargo has accomplished very little, and Castro won't be in power forever. Do we let countries like China have unfettered access to resources off the Florida coast, while denying them to our own country because of the embargo? What do YOU think?

Magnetic that is very forward thinking and when we get honest brokers in leadership again they will offer solutions that will meet the needs of the Cubans plus give ground to all the families in Florida it will not be perfect but to cede influence and affluence to up and coming powers is just plain failure. Other countries smell something in the water and they better not mis calculate how we can bounce back and are resilient as we tolerate and survive bad diplomacy and leadership from this white house.

Castro could have been softened up the last 6 years and we would be in the cat birds seat to bring gentle revolution in Cuba...but we are not well positioned at all.

Yeah! I would go see Castro if I was President ...and be dumb as the fox
look him square in the eye and think to myself ...your not gonna be around much longer and when you do the United States will innudate Cuba with
good free market lively hoods ..it might turn out Cuba would turn out to be a hybrid state with free markets plus an active government ..but what is the other choice??? Castro hand picks a hard line successor that is to the extreme anti-american and finds new and wanting customers such as Canada, Mexico, China, Russia, Europe..etc..etc.

The embargo should be lifted but it will not because of the lack of reaching out and being smart by this white house administration.

    imho

We don't need Cuban oil when we have plenty of American oil to be drilling in ANWR and off the east and west coasts. All it takes is enough members of Congress and the president being willing to stand up to the environmental wackos.

Look to the Heart of America once again

Oh boy is that a whooper! Americans and I would say who are in the middle are not the so called whackos ....they do like their beaches and golf courses and would want options beside never ending oil...Americans and again from the middle and not the so called "whackos" want innovation but my salient point is ceding influence and affluence in our own hemisphere to China and Russia that is my main point. America needs the world and this is even more important the world needs a good America. The world has gotten that small and is getting smaller all the time so I would rather we reassert ourselves and be a good Alexander and
spread our goodness rather than Russia or China and besides their track record is abysmal.

America needs to be smart again and out maneuver the same old same old
and give big oil a piece of the pie but the lion share of a future Independent Energy America should go to the innovators...and I would look to the heartland.(major hint)

In the year 2012 the Population of Nebraska has swelled to 10 million:smilewinkgrin:

    Always has. Always will.

Drilling is a much cleaner process than it was forty years ago. We can drill with an extremely small footprint that won't hurt pristine areas or beaches.

By the way, corn-based ethanol is the least efficient of the biofuels and will never amount to more than a drop in the bucket of our energy needs.

We need to look to unedible plants and such for biofuels. BP is a pioneer in this area.

I respectfully disagree about the embargo. Why do y'all think that if you treat a tyrant like a democrat (small d), he will become a democrat?

It's like when I heard Al Sharpton say "today's terrorist can be tomorrow's friend...."

And today's friend can be tomorrow's terrorist. Reagan and Bush lavished praise and aid on the "freedom fighters" in Afghanistan, who later took on another "great Satan" on 9/11.

My feeling is that we have squandered an opportunity to forge a relationship with a nation that borders our own, to move them slowly toward the friendship we formerly shared with them. We stand alone in the embargo. Canada and Mexico both have relations with Cuba.

I don't think the embargo has accomplished anything but continued emnity between the countries. I also don't believe that as a free man, my government has the right to restrict me should I desire to travel to Cuba, or anywhere else. Yes, technically one can go to Cuba, but legally cannot spend a dime there. Makes it hard to do, unless one resorts to the tricks of portage in Canada or Mexico and not getting the passport stamped.

Castro will die soon, and we should be looking toward the future. Even if there was no petroleum to be gained from Cuba, ending the embargo and normalizing relations is the right thing to do.

How many Americans has Cuba killed in the last 30 years? We tolerate tyrants in China, VietNam, and North Africa because money is more important than morals. If Castro was supplying us with cocane instead of growing sugar and tobacco we would be tolerating him. I suspect the real reason for the embargo is our sugar lobby doesn't want Cuban sugar on the market. Americans pay what? 10 times world price?

You guys are talking about Castro. And you are talking about Castro like a bunch of Yankees across the border trying to negotiate a 'Mexican' down to a 'cheap price' using your gutter spanish and laughing with your friend in english about how stupid the 'Mexican' is.

Castro is only Castro's friend. He actually is a pretty smart guy, but his intelligence led his country down a road of economic depression that Cuba will not recover from for at least 20 years.

So, how do you negotiate with a man that believed negotiating was always through the barrel of a gun? Yes, Castro's predecessors were probably worse. But, this guy killed people for the 'better good'. This guy has never liked the USA. And he is still angry because the people he doesn't like came here and got rich.

And until you can placate him about the Cuban-American issue - you won't have a treaty for long.

Now that is an angle, but I think that the Cuban-American population is a pwerful lobby in its own right.
