Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible:

What are your thoughts regarding this study Bible?
I don't know about this particular one, but from my own experience with "study Bibles," I early found that I was looking at the notes prior to developing my own thinking upon a certain passage, and therefore taking the notes as more authoritative than other sources.

So, I set aside the "study Bibles."

However, if such a Bible incites the believer to read and to consider cultural matters when dealing with the Scriptures it will be somewhat better.

I’ve got this one digitally in Logos Bible Software.

Craig Keener and John H. Walton put it together.
Understanding their hermeneutical method makes one appreciate these study notes more.

“The Bible is therefore for us but was not written to us.”
“We are not in the implied audience of the human author [of Scripture]”

“We not only have to recognize the ancient context (so that we do not impose our modern thinking on the text); we also have to resist only reading the Old Testament text in light of the New Testament.”
(Old Testament Theology for Christians, John H. Walton. 2017. p. 3
The study notes are a helpful addition to help reorient one to the period that’s being studied.

So you should recognize that this is not a resource that will explain difficult verses or passages but one that assists you in researching the background of the passage.
