    Sure are!

I ride to and from work everyday, and it has been the best thing that have ever happened to me healthwise!

I have a few bikes. I have a real nice Cannondale mountain bike. I bought it in '95, & it's got at least 10,000 miles on it.

I bought my wife a Cannondale, also, & got her into mountain biking. She loves it.

I have a lesser quality bike that I ride back & forth to work, everyday, even in the rain. 2.6 miles each way.

It is a whole lot harder to ride trails than it is to ride roads. I always wear my Bell helmet. I put the clipless pedals, which actually make your shoe a part of the pedal. I have a Camelback backpack, which keeps water cold, and a tube that goes right next to my face.

Ever notice how much you can eat after riding hard for three or four hours ? It's incredible !!!

I do love biking. Come to MT & experience some high altitude huffin' & puffin'. Nothing like it in the world.

    A Cannondale?
    I am impressed.

My first bike was a Fuji ATB bike (still have it, actually). It is a solid entry-level bike that has held up well.

My current ATB is a Raleigh M40 with a hardtail (took that word from the Raleigh website) that I bought in 2003. Although it is better than most bikes you find in any of the superstores or any sporting goods stores, it is just above an entry-level bike. HOWEVER, it has taken anything I can do to abuse it. I added clipless pedals (SPD on one side, regular pedal on the other), and a Cateye Enduro to keep track of my progress. I have been flirting with a Cannondale that I saw in my local bike store.

Because any rides on the road longer than 15 miles would give me a backache, I purchased a Specialized Allez road bike. On a paved surface, it is like going from a Honda Civic to a Ferrari - much lighter and much quicker. I added clipless pedals to this, along with a Cateye Wireless to keep track of my progress. I live in downtown Richmond, so I ride every night after work.

Not always: a good friend of mine who lives in Colorado would like to take you on a ride over the Continental Divide and see if you still think that.

I was told by someone that if you don't wear a helmet, most serious cyclists won't ride anywhere near you, as this implies that you have some sort of deathwish.

Something tells me that you would have to carry me the rest of the way. That friend of mine said that you can REALLY tell the difference when you come from the East to ride at the high altitudes.

    Regards,
BiR (hope I can take you up on that some day)

    Bro. Curtis:

    Is your Cannondale full-suspension?

    Regards,

Front-only. I don't like full suspension, uphill energy gets converted to bouncing up & down.

REALLY? I never thought about that. I have only ridden one (a friend of mine has one and I took a spin).
How about clipless pedals? I installed some Shimano spd pedals on my mountain bike and it makes going uphill a little easier. I keep the pedal loose so I can clip out before going down with the ship. The Xterra was in Richmond two weekends ago and I saw several people with clipless on their ATB's.

Thanks for the insight - your opinion is much appreciated!

Hope all is well with you and your wonderful family,
    BiR

The first thing I did to my bike was add clippless pedals, Specialized, I believe. I added handlebar extensions, and a gel split seat, later. I've gone thru several back rims, but still have the original front.

Do you use disc, or rubber brakes ?

I tried the handlebar extensions, but decided that I didn't use them - so I removed them and put them on my cousin's bike. I too went the route of the gel split seat, and I am still on my original rims.

I now love clipless pedals so much that I really struggle with a bike that does not have them.

Currently, I have rubber brakes, but the more modern ones. Someone told me that a disk brake upgrade is not that hard to do.

I am headed to the Smoky Mountains for the weekend, but could not bring my bike on the plane. Oh, well - may try renting a bike.

Any plans for a ride this weekend?

Actually, we are going to northern Idaho for a mt. bike ride thru some old mining tunnels. I have Monday & Tuesday off, so I'll take my fishing pole to one of the lakes for a little camp-out.
