D L Moody - good? or bad? Informed?

DHK brings up an interesting point that I had not considered before -- what if Baptists are not really in favor of D.L.Moody's understanding of the Bible and God?

Could it be that Baptists now reject his teaching as somehow being inferior?

Please spare us Bob.
The SDA and the Oneness Pentecostal both have a propensity to quote Moody, for whatever reason I don't know. Moody had a grade five education. I don't look to him for my source of theology.

Moody was a great evangelist, without doubt.

But he was a Congregationalist, not a Baptist. That's not all bad, since there are a lot of similarities. Jonathan Edwards was a Congregationalist, and so were a lot of the Pilgrims and Puritans.

Moody wasn't a Baptist, but was there something aberrant in his theology that we should know about?

We must remember that "the Fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom/knowledge" (Psalms 111:10; Proverbs 1:7). Dwight Moody had this kind of wisdom that I wish to learn.

I've never heard a bad thing about DL Moody and I know a few graduates of Moody Bible Institute.

It is a great study to see how God used the man. If God can and He did use a man with such a limited education, why shouldn't we learn about him and how he was used?

As I was taught in school at the start of the Church we were talking about a group of people and not a building or a denomination. There was not a separated class called clergy and often they were not full time pastors. The pastors service to the church as a pastor/ teacher was more of his role in the church, than his employment. It is an error to break up the church between clergy and lay folks.

Moody would be very close to the early church when he started. Lack of formal education but God used him to get the Good News out to lost folks, and many got saved.

Peter wrote two epistles and John wrote five of our books including the book of Revelation. Does that sound "unlearned and ignorant." Each of these men knew: Hebrew, Greek, Aramaic, and Latin at least; probably more if they, like Thomas, went to India to preach the gospel. That doesn't sound like "unlearned and ignorant" men.

The term "unlearned and ignorant" came from the Pharisees sitting on the council of the Sanhedrin. It meant that they didn't go the same "schools of thought" that they had been to. They didn't go to the "Pharasaical Seminaries or shall we say "cemeteries."

hmmm - Another new one on me. Maybe Moody thought it would be a "doctrine of demons" to not eat a diseased rat sandwich -- thanks for bringing that up - I will have to look into it.

You guys have so many wonderful ideas to add to the subjects he wrote about.

Question -- if your rumor is true - would that make him "Baptist"??

Not saying that the Moody Bible Institute serves the diseased rats that Tom so devotedly brings up for us to consider as being the "Christian" way -- but out of curiosity - is the Moody Bible Institute really not a Baptist teaching institution?

Or is this too far off the "rat sandwich" view of Grace that some have latched on to?



For example - Erwin Lutzer (pastor of the Moody church since 1980) is Baptist if I am not mistaken.
