Danish pictures of Mohammed cause uproar.

    Responding to a complaint by the Organization of Islamic Conferences (OIC) over twelve caricatures of the prophet Muhammad published in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten last September, Louise Arbour - United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights - has appointed two UN experts on racism to carry out a detailed investigation into what Arbour characterizes as a “disrespect for belief.”

    Why did Jyllands-Posten publish the cartoons? The Copenhagen Post explains: “Jyllands-Posten called for and printed the cartoons by various Danish illustrators, after reports that artists were refusing to illustrate works about Islam, out of fear of fundamendalist retribution. The newspaper said it printed the cartoons as a test of whether Muslim fundamentalists had begun affecting the freedom of expression in Denmark.”

    Srinagar, Dec 9: Muslim League Jammu Kashmir today organised a public protest rally from Mazar-i-Shuhda Naqashband Sahab here against the sacrilegious act of publishing “cartoon” of Hazrat Muhammad (SAW) by Denmark based daily newspaper Jyllen Posten.
    Hundreds of people, including ML leaders and activists participated in the protest rally. The participants raised pro-Islamic slogans and recited Na’at. They also raised slogans against the impudent and sacrilegious act of publishing of “Cartoon” which has offended the religious sentiments of Muslims World over.
    According to a spokesman of Muslim League, when the rally reached Khankahi Moula the police stopped it and people staged a dharna.
    Speaking on the occasion, the ML leaders urged the UN secretary general Kofi Anan for the ouster of Denmark from UN membership.

    Most editorial cartoons disrespect somebody's belief, kind of the point.

    They have a right to publish. However, it is always best to respect somebody. In Islam, Muhammad is not to be drawn. The paper said it was a test. Well if you draw Jesus hanging on a occult star you may get outrage as well. I guess they got the attention they wanted.

    Speaking as an arthistorian, I've seen a number of pictures of Mohammed, made within at least 2 seperate traditions of Islamic art, 1 in Persia, 1 in the Ottoman Empire.
    So maybe it's not so clearcut...

    The reason why mosques do not have paintings of figures such as Muhammad is because of the understanding it is forbidden. But, I'm sure there have been some artwork of such. I've seen them too.

    One of the drawings in the paper in question shows Muhammad wearing a turban shaped as a bomb with a burning fuse. No doubt this is disrespectful.

    Is it just me, or do the islam believers seem just a bit prickly?

    Christians have been fed to lions and we are still here.

    Seems to me if your faith stands the tests of time, you wont waste energy squawking over a drawing.

    Mioque is right, nothing is *that* clearcut. I say...get over it.

    Whenever a disrespectful portrayal of Jesus, or anything of that sort, many people rise up saying it mocks Christians, it is demeaning. I can see why they would be offended. A few years ago there was complaints about the movie Dogma, before that The Last Temptation of Christ. Right now there is complaints about the use or lack of use of Merry Christmas. You could extend the argument to say ones beliefs and faith are above a simple seasonal greeting. If one wants their beliefs respected, it has to go all around.

    Put a crucifix in a jar of urine and it is art. Draw a cartoon of Mohammed and you are a hate-mongering, insensitive racist.

    You can take a portrayal of Jesus and make him look like Jimmy Hendricks and ya know what? I still believe in Jesus. Whoopity do. If we put as much energy into getting along instead of pointing out the differences, the world would be a much better place.

    I can see why *they* (whomever that is because you can insert a different group every second of the day) would be offended as well. I just dont much care. It isnt the end of the world and nobody got blown up over it. Its about perspective. Get some.
