I stated on another thread that the KJVO movement began about 1970. I am sure that defenders of this modern phenomenon must have lists of men who held to this position - that only the AV1611 is inspired. I know many godly men who only used the KJV1769revision, but have no evidence that they were "onlies".

Would appreciate any quotations (and please, some verification/support for them holding this position) at the AV1611 is the only "version". I'm starting a list of "onlies" or no.

    Papias? No
    Origen? No
    Tertullian? No
    Augustine? No
    Anselm? No
    Chrysostom? No
    Sarvonarola? No
    Wycliffe? No
    Tyndale? No
    Luther? No
    Calvin? No

    Spurgeon? No
    Sunday? No
    Clearwaters? No
    Rice? No

Appreciate the help with my list: [IMG]

I got my first KJVO flyer from a
KJV1873 ONLY seller in 1967. So
the KJVO movement had to have started
    prior to the 1970s.

When the NIV came out in 1973, this
is probably when the KJVO movement
    got some adherents [IMG]

Benjamin G. Wilkinson wrote his “Our Authorized Bible Vindicated” in 1930.
Edward F. Hill wrote “The King James Version Defended” in 1956.
David Otis Fuller wrote “Which Bible?” in 1970.

These three men would be “onlies.”

Ironically, the KJV translators would not be “onlies.” ;)

aefting posted the same info I have in my notes. Wilkinson appears to be the first "only". Here's some additional info:

    - Wilkinson was a Seventh Day Adventist missionary and college president.
    - Wilkinson is likely the first to apply Psalm 12:6-7 to the idea of word-for-word preservation of the KJV. I say "likely" simply because no one prior made the claim, at least on paper.
    - Wilkinson's book went largely ignored
    - In 1955, J.J.Ray wrote "God Wrote Only One Bible" which heavily plagarized Wilkinson.
    - Ruckman joins the list in 1964 with "The Bible Babel", which is heavily dependent on the material from Ray's book. Ruckman is the first to claim the KJV has no copyright, and that there was no Greek OT (i.e. LXX) until the 4th century A.D.. Ruckman echoes Wilkinson's claim about Psalm 12:6-7.
    - David Fuller says of Ray's book: it "moved me to begin this fascinating study." Fuller repeatedly refers to Ray and his book in the first few pages of "Which Bible?"
    - Almost half of Fuller's "Which Bible" is directly taken from Wilkinson's book, but edited to remove reference to Wilkinson's affilication with the SDAs, and to correct several factual errors (although he missed several, and misrepresents a few people, including Spurgeon and Burgon). According to KJV-O author D. A. Waite, Fuller knew full-well that Wilkinson was an Adventist and deliberately concealed that fact from the reader, and even from the publisher, because the Baptist brethren "wouldn't understand."
    - Fuller's "Which Bible?" contains writings from Robert Dick Wilson, Zane Hodges and others who reject TR-onlyism/KJV-onlyism. At least one contributor complained about the way Fuller had altered the writer's point of view in the editing process.
    - Waite, Bynum, Chick, Riplinger, and a myriad of others follow suit, and the movement gains enough of a following in the 70s-90s that we now have to have forums like this one to deal with this strange, new, emotional-based doctrine that seeks to divide the church and cause people to doubt their Bibles.

This info comes from Doug Kutilek, and is a very brief summary of his article: "Roots" of the KJV Controversy

Fullers book is probably the first one I was exposed to on the subject.

Well slap me upside the head. I asked for proof of the only movement starting before "around" 1970. 1967 would be "around".

And a 7th day Adventist is the key support thus far. Gets interestinger and interestinger.

No, no, no, no, no, no, and who is Wendy Bagwell? [IMG]

BTW, Zwingli *certainly* wasn't KJV-only - he died 80 years before the KJV was produced. [IMG]

</font>[/QUOTE]I was just throwing famous preachers out there. Wendy Bagwell is not a famous preacher, but was a popular southern gospel performer with his group, "Wendy Bagwell and the Sunlighters." I was just kidding.

Thank you, Brother BrianT, for your
    mini-history of KJVO.

How many KJVOs get their theology
from the Jack Chick comic: SABOTAGED

Ah, that's a classic. Have you read it? A comic book is certainly the appropriate genre. [IMG] His little tract "The Attack" is also great fun.

i did, n became KJBO. but, i repented n got right.

btw, what's the pub date on SABOTAGED? does anyone think that Alberto, which i think followed it shortly, was planted by the Romanist church?

how did this KJBO thing spontaneously sprout up around the 1970s?

no, lemme think, wasn't there a big hooha by the ICCC over the RSV (if Isa 7:14 didn't roil enuff feathers, the Common Bible edition sure did! ;) ) n TEV when they first came out? anyone remember the slogan "Bad News for Modern Man"?

now, what were the pub dates of the RSV n TEV?

lemme ramble a little more. there were giants in those days ... conservatives like evangelist Bob Jones "used" n recommended the likes of the ASV n Amplified Bible. thx to Metzger n AT Robertson, checking out the Gk wasn't a sin. cld it be that the peak of the War on Liberalism was when KJBOism suddenly became a useful rallying point for certain conservatives seeking a magic bullet?

well, on hindsight it might've backfired! [IMG]

[IMG] ROTFL [IMG] His "Rattlesnake" song was one of the funniest things I have ever heard in my life. If you can get a copy, download it, or borrow it but listen to it.

Forever settled in heaven: "btw, what's the pub date on SABOTAGED?"

I can't find my copy. But i had a copy
in the early 1980s (like 1981).
Probably if i had a copy in hand, i'd not know
the first publication date. For i suspect Chick,
like most of the KJV persons, doesn't bother to put
the date of their revision into the book lest
their perfidy be revealed. Quite frankly, i've
never NEVER seen a KJVO who actually uses
    the AV-KJV1611 -- isn't that ironic

I believe what really fanned the flames was the publication of the TEV (Good News for Modern Man) New Testament in 1966. I remember reading several attacks on that translation in IFB publications about that time, mostly charging that the new translation denied the virgin birth.

the RSV's OT came out in 1952, which contained its controversial rendering of Isa. 7:14. woo hoo, did the sparks fly after that. i remember seeing pictures of the WCC boat logo w a bunch of robed liberals, all looking somewhat demented, grinning w "PERversions" in hand, w the guy at the back tossing out the KJB.

i wonder if attacks in the 1950s - 1960s against the RSV wld qualify as KJBO, or perhaps KJBOism as we know it still hadn't gelled yet.

for the date of SABOTAGE, thx, Edifier n BrianT.

The "proof is in the pudding". The obsession with this topic is become a god and should be burnt with everlasting flames!

Since there seems to be many educated persons in this BB.com, it would only seem logical to move on to bigger and better things to disprove the worship of this obsession of yours.

So then the scholarly reference would be:
    SABOTAGED? (Jack Chick, 1979)

Every body join me singing now [IMG]

    My hope is built
    On nothing less,
    Than Schofields notes
    And Jack Chick press!
