I have been through many phases in politics since being able to vote. I grew up in Gulfport, MS, from a very conservative family. As a teen, and having been alive through the Kennedy assasination, and being rebelious as teens are, I latched onto Robert Kennedy as a good candidate for President. Well, we know how that turned out. My first vote was in 1972, and voted for Nixon, as the economy seemed to be improving and we were getting out of Vietnam. I even got to shake his hand while in the service. Well, we know how Nixon turned out also.
By 1976, I thought we needed a change, and a southerner was running, so I voted for Carter. This is the only Democrat vote I have ever cast for President. Strike three, we saw how that turned out.
From 1980 on, I did not pay much attention, and voted Republican when the election rolled around. From 1988 on however, I did notice a slow but definite deterioration in the Republican Party as far as conservatism and principles. To me, McCain was the last straw of Republican liberalism. I voted for him for lack of anything better to do.
Shortly after than, I joined the Consitution Party and became active in it. I was actually a delegate to the 2008 National Convention. That turned out to be an eye opener. First of all, I was the only delegate from our state to show up. The rest of the delegates there seemed more interested in party time than grass roots work. I was so disguisted coming back hom, after wasting several hundered dollars in expenses and time, that I rejoined the Republican Party despite Romney.
During this time on BB, I argued with many voting for Romney. I finally decided to vote for him despite him not being a Christian and pro abortion and gay rights while governor of MA because he will do less damage than Obama. It is not a positive vote. I have come to the conslusion the only way to make a change is from within the Republican Party.
The thing is, one must start right after the election. We learned nothing in 2008, as evidenced by the quality of the nominee. Maybe next time we will.
There was a time when both candidates were acceptable, and one could choose on positive qualities, but not in the last several elections.
