defrag help?

If you have win xp I think it is start/accessories/system tools/defrag

In Vista it is start/all programs/accessories/system tools/disk defrag.

It will take quite awhile probably so don't start it until you can leave it alone for an hour or three.

It is good if you empty your recycle bin and open your browser and go to options and empty the cache, but not overly important.

Be sure to shut your screen saver off if you have one and shut all programs off before starting.

 

Defrag used to take 30 min on a 40Meg disk.
Isn't an 80Gig disk about 2,000 times as much as a 40MEg disk (retorical question, of course - YES). I'm surprised it would only take 3 hours???

 

It's relative. Yes, hard drives hold more storage now; but they also have faster access speeds.

 

3 hours was just a guess, last time I did my 250 gig it took most of the evening and all night :laugh::laugh:

It depends a lot on how much stuff you have on it. I had over 200 gig of junk to get shifted around.

 

That's why I love O&O Defrag Professional Edition. It runs in the background and keeps my hard drives defragged. The Windows defrag will leave a drive partially fragmented, even after it runs, but O&O will take a drive to 0% fragmentation... without slowing you down.

 

I was told by our Systems guy at work to do "cleanup" first & then defrag.

Here's what I wrote on my note to myself: (Windows)
Program
Accessories
System Tools
Do cleanup
Then Defrag (Do not Compress)

And also, I found out if you are on a cable modem, (like Comcast high speed internet like me) sometimes if I just reboot my cable modem box, things speed up. The trouble is with their equipment/beam or whatever it is, not my computer, it seems.

Using System Cleanup can help, but only if you know what you're doing.

I use CCleaner. http://majorgeeks.com/CCleaner_Slim_No_Toolbar_d4191.html Awesome little program. It not only gets rid of temp files, it can clean out index files, cookies, and the temp files of other programs. It can also clean up your registry. Can't beat the price either.
