    Saddam's Nukes?
Does Carl Levin know something the rest of us don't?
    by Stephen F. Hayes

DOES SENATOR CARL LEVIN believe that Saddam Hussein had nukes?

Levin, the second ranking Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, is leading the charge against the White House for manipulating intelligence on Iraq and its weapons of mass destruction and connections to al Qaeda. He has been dogged and ruthless, focusing his criticism on two areas of the Bush administration's case for war in Iraq: the connection between Iraq and al Qaeda and Saddam Hussein's nuclear weapons program. Levin claims that the Bush administration manipulated intelligence in both areas to frighten the American public into supporting a war of choice.

Which is why Levin's latest claim is so startling. On Monday, Levin appeared on Hardball with Chris Matthews on MSNBC and made the following declaration:

"There was plenty of evidence that Saddam had nuclear weapons, by the way. That is not in dispute. There is plenty of evidence of that."

Domestic and foreign intelligence agencies had a lot of Senators and Congressmen, as well as President Bush, convinced that Saddam was pursuing a nuclear weapons program.

I have no doubt that he was but he may not have been as far along as everyone thought.

It is a big country with lots of anitamerican neighbors. I am not sure why you would be surprised that they did not find any. He had months to dispose of them.

I don't remember anyone in the Bush Administration saying Saddam had nuclear weapons. Carl Levin has made the only absolute declaration I know of. ;) Many did say, however, he was pursuing them and there is evidence of that.

1.77 Metric tons of Enriched uranium.

1000 radioactive materials that could be used for making dirty bombs.

Missiles for delivery purposes whose range far exceeded agreed ranges.

Just more evidence of how complicated this subject was back in 2002-03 and why no one should accuse anyone - Democrat or Republican - of lying about the intel.

    Freudian slip? </font>[/QUOTE]
No, Durbin, the Democractic Senate Whip, isn't doing a good job keeping his party's members on point (what the Whip is supposed to do). How is that Freudian or a slip?

Yes, and he is making the claim, even in that interview, that the newly declassified papers lend credence that the White House misused and ignored the intelligence it had in making its case for war.
    The Mathews interview (link)

The specific claim was that Saddam had the capability to have them ready to deploy in six months (Cheney).

The Freudian slip was by Levin.

He does seem to be a bit confused. ;)

You're right though. Durbin needs to make sure his guys all tell the same lie, even if they believe different. Like Levin.

As Rush say's the Democratic party is a party without vision or answers. Just accusers. They are also a party that is heavily divided among it's own ranks they are going to have to change drastically to retake the white house or even the senate!

It would be nice if the Democratic members of Congress would come with up something for the 2006 races similar in format to the Contract With America that the Republicans ran on in 1994.

No, they need to be clear on the true, important points and not get disrtacted by opposition lies and foolishness (such as quotes taken out of context).

Let me see if I have this straight:
When the intelligence is wrong and the President accepts it, he's wrong and when the intelligence is right and he doesn't accept it , he's wrong.

    Sound about right?

So if he always accepts it , right or wrong, he'll have to take responsibility for it when it's wrong and accept no credit for it when it's right. And listen to "I told you so"s either way.

And when the intelligence is iffy, which it often is, no matter what he does, he's wrong.

Sounds like a job big enough for Christ , but we only have human's available, of course.

No one thought there were any nukes there. Sadam was trying to buy the components to make some. He had tons of nerve agents, and had even killed his own people with them.
