WASHINGTON - House Democrats, insistent that they will hold lawmakers to higher ethical standards when they assume power next month, decided Tuesday that Rep. William Jefferson will not be returned to an influential committee until a federal corruption investigation involving him is completed.

    STORY LINK

It's good to see the Democrats doing the right thing. Would a Repubican led congress do that? Hum....

If you think the Democrats are above playing politics and being partisan, then I have a bridge I'd like to sell you in San Francisco  Their past is just as checkered as the GOP's.

    Hiya Tom,

If you've read any of my posts, then you would know that I think BOTH parties are corrupt. I just think that it's nice to see them at least attempt to do the right thing. Baby steps in the right direction...

When either party does something that is the right thing, I think we should be thankful and hope that it's a catching way of doing business... I know that's asking for too much, but there is always hope.... That or a 3rd party.

I, too, believe that corruption plays no favorite. Both Dems and the GOP have their fair share of digusting political antics.

However, if you believe that the Dems are keeping Jeffereson "out" of the Ways/Means or any other political committee because they are trying to raise the standards of ethics, you are sorely naive.

Right now, if the Dems want to go back into the White House in 2008, they must at least give the appearance of being above board.

And right now, Jefferson's reputation is like pig manure....if you get a little on your face, you wouldn't walk around in public like that, you'd clean yourself up before anyone saw you.

Their just keeping their faces clean for the public's sake.

It's not ethics that is moving this decision to keep him away from any finanacial responsibility. It's not even good common horse sense.

It's avoiding anything that could potentially ruin any attempt to get back into the White House.

Under the very same circumstances, probably.

I too think that, in similar circumstances, the Republicans would have kept someone off the ways and means.

Again I will state that I think BOTH parties are corrupt, but I think you guys are giving the Republians way too much credit.

I doubt they would have done it. They would have given him his post and then tried hard to push past it and push it under the rug.

How many Republicans fell last year, vers how many were told to step down by their party?

Again, I can understand why you think the Democrats are just doing things "right" to work their way into the White House in 08, but I seriously doubt that the Republicans would have done it. They didn't when they were in power, and now we're suppose to think they have or will change!?!

Hum... I won't hold my breathe...

That's why hypothetical questions are pretty much a waste of time.

Does that mean you won't use them anymore? Or quote articles that use them?

I've been hard on both parties. But I really think that the Republicans would not allow someone like Jefferson to serve on the ways and means. I think the Dems did the right thing. I don't know what else to say here.

Actually the Republican accused of such things voluntarily stepped aside instead of being removed by his party.

You have, since the Democrats won, posted article after article on how they will manage and run the Congress, and yet they haven't even gone into session yet.

Is it an exact question per sec? No, however you assume, or presume that they will be worse than the Republicans or at least as bad.

Hypothetical questions - hypothetical posts same difference to me, and I just thought since you think they are a waste of time, then you won't post them anymore. :)

This statement might be true, only because of the "the". You can't say that every Republican have stepped down before his party removed them. You can't say that about either party.

Even so, I STILL think it's refreshing to see the Democrats do the right thing.

    I believe you are mistaken.

Democrats being in the majority is no longer an "if" situation. It's a done deal. Predicting how they will conduct business is not a "hypothetical" situation.

    I disagree...

Under the current President... Thanks goodness, it's a done deal. Some balance has been restored.

    hy·po·thet·i·cal (hī'pə-thĕt'ĭ-kəl) [IMG] also hy·po·thet·ic (-thĕt'ĭk)
    adj.
    1. Of, relating to, or based on a hypothesis: a hypothetical situation. See synonyms at theoretical.
      1. Suppositional; uncertain. See synonyms at supposed.
      2. Conditional; contingent.
Read 2a or 2b Are you telling me that you KNOW how the Democrats as a whole are going to act? That's a nice "gift" you have if you truely know exactly what they are going to do.

Don't get me wrong, they are corrupt just like the Republicans, however you, or no one can KNOW what they are or are not going to do in every situtation, not without giving them the benefit of the doubt, and waiting and seeing for ourselves.

So, predicting how they will act IS a hypothetical question/situtation. I can't see how you would call it anything else.

Sorry, but you don't get to decide what words mean.

    hy·po·thet·i·cal
adj. 1. Of, relating to, or based on a hypothesis: a hypothetical situation. See Synonyms at theoretical.
    2. a. Suppositional; uncertain. See Synonyms at supposed.
    b. Conditional; contingent.

    n. A hypothetical circumstance, condition, scenario, or situation: OK, let's consider this possibility then[IMG]just as a hypothetical.

    I choose this one.

    b. Conditional; contingent.

The contingency or the conditional situation no longer exist. Democrats are now in power.

How they will conduct business may be conjectural on my part, but it is no longer a hypothetical situation.

If you still disagree, then we will also have to agree to disagree.

And that is always a choice I am free to make.:tongue3:

Under the very same circumstances, probably.

We already know the answer. No, they didn't. It's why we don't have a Republican-led Congress any more.
