Describing Your Preaching Style

Expository, no screaming or yelling.

 

Always topical in morning, but based on a given scripture. It depended on the perceived needs of the congregations, and the fact that more unsaved visitors were present.

Evenings were expositional, but I rarely stayed with one book to the end.

If I preached from the Old Testament, it was topical, in the sense that I talked about a single chapter and the lesson there.

90 % expository. !0% topical I try to preach through books of the Bible, verse by verse, but I will pause here and there to preach a special sermon for seasonal events such as holidays like the opening of deer season etc.

 

Wow! What would your text be? "As the hart pants for the waterbrooks, so pants my soul after Thee, O God?"

Or maybe, "Thou shalt not kill!"

 

I enjoy preaching through chapters, but I also do some topical preaching. I am not sure of the %, but it is possibly 50 % exp. and 50 % topical. It does change to higher %s at times.

 

I'm primarily expositional, and when I am topical, I'll still work to deal with the texts that focus on that topical sermon. That is the direction of my preaching.

Style wise, I can go from one extreme to another. I've done monolouges where I've dressed up as a Roman and "talked through" what I experienced during the crucifixion, I've done hard-shell turn and burn sermons, I've done heavily theological sermons, I've done the typical 3 points and a poem stuff, I've been loud and foceful, quiet and reflective, I've wept and laughed, but my preferred style is a teaching sermon, presented in Socratic fashion, where I ask questions and/or answer questions that drive the text.

I typically lay out a problem, then solve it via the text.

I also preach "verb" sermons instead of "noun" sermons. Ask if you don't know what that means. That may be the most common error I see in preachers!

 

I am expositional with a sprinkling of topical in there somewhere. Even when going topical I dig into the exposition so as to show what the bible says... not what people just thinks it says about the topic. I tend to teach more than preach, so I don't yell, spit, and snort, but I can get loud when I get excited.

 

I preach to the deaf so I am vewwy, vewwy quiet, although my voice interpreters might get a bit loud. And I tend to preach expository messages.

 

Topical in the am service (usually) and expository in the pm and Wednesday pm service.

The thing is, though, between the Sr. pastor, the five young men we're mentoring for ministry, and me, I find myself actually preaching less and less and teaching in the classroom more and more.
