    Deserter coming home. . .

This leaves me in a quandary . . . on the one hand, he is turning himself in, and his turning himself in is a good thing. But, on the other hand - he is only turning himself in because he cannot work in Canada. Not because he is contrite, wants to get over his past, or anything like that, but because he cannot feed himself.

Why is the Army not charging him with desertion ?

There should at least be a court-martial to determine if his being a decorated soldier counts towards mitigation.

I don't know. You guys know better.

This chap did not desert in the face of military action, and I can fully understand his not wanting to go back to Iraq for a second tour. It is not my cup of tea, but I do understand.

He has done the right thing, for whatever reason, and I am not about to judge his thinking. I have experienced war and I am not sure I would want to go again either.

Cheers, and all the best to him,,,he did serve.

That is a great expression of the quandary that I find myself in.

    Cheers!

He just walked away from his duty, and didn't return?

Who does he think he is, George W. Bush?

    No quandary here.

He's a deserter and should be treated as one. His prior honorable service will, I'm sure, mitigate his sentence, but should not change the verdict.

Interesting how much difference a half century makes. Would there have been any question or public dissension about what to do with him if he had gone AWOL in say... 1944?

Pray tell, What would have happened in 1944?

    Did you serve in battle?

    Cheers,

    Jim
