I was watching the Military Channel tonight. The subject was about Sodom. After some research, they determine it was an asteroid which caused the destruction of Sodom.

thoughts?

They also mentioned that the sin of Sodom was not only Sodomy but other sins as well.

Thoughts?

[23]*The sun had risen on the earth when Lot came to Zoar. [24]*Then the LORD rained on Sodom and Gomorrah sulfur and fire from the LORD out of heaven. [25]*And he overthrew those cities, and all the valley, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground.
(Genesis 19:23-25 ESV)

An asteroid? I suppose it is possible. It certainly was a cataclysmic event.

As to Sodom's sin; sexual immortality normally does exist independent of other forms of wickedness.

Well Ezekiel 16:49 makes it clear that Sodom's primary sin was not immorality but pride, gluttony, and neglecting the poor.

If an asteroid is what did it, so be it. I don't usually ask how God accomplished His will in regards to something, only that He has accomplished it.

It is possible it was an asteroid. God is capable of doing that. I saw a thing on the History channel a couple of years ago and it suggested it could have been a volcano. Again, it's God's creation and He uses it as He wills.

And no, I don't think sodomy was their only sin.

Sexual sins do not exist in a vacuum independent of all other sins. The very basis of sexual sin is pride and selfishness.

You and I believe it becasue the Bible tells us.

Many unsaved will not belive it unless science can prove it.

Now that science has proved it - and now they believe.....

While EZK 16 brings out a fuller picture of what the sodomite agaenda lead to in that day......the primary sin that brought on the judgement is clearly identified in the NT>

7 Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.

there is something particularlly evil about the distorting of the creation ordinance of man as an image bearer- and the marriage of a man and woman showing Christ and the Church that brings this severe judgement.

49 Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.

these sins led to the ultimate giving over to the immorality...like in romans one....when God gives men over...sodomite sin is the result of the judgement.
50 And they were haughty, and committed abomination before me: therefore I took them away as I saw good.

Salty-good question I've recently done a study on the topic & found 3 main natural explanations for how God could have brought destruction (which actually came through angels) on Sodom & the surrounding cities. While there are others the 3 main Natural Explanations for how this happened were
• Volcano
• Asteroid
• Earthquake

personally i like the Earthquake theory which as one scholar explains—“But the explanation that provides the most likely historical and geological context for the legendary destruction is a massive earthquake. The Dead Sea, part of the enormous geological fault line known as the Great Rift Valley, has been the epicenter of powerful earthquakes for countless millennia...Matching the earthquake theory to the Biblical conflagration..Most have proposed that the earthquake caused the natural sulfur and bitumen deposits of the Dead Sea area to erupt to the surface, thereby releasing large quantities of natural gas into the air. When exposed to fire—perhaps created by a lightning strike from above—the gas could have ignited and turned the entire plain into a huge furnace, consuming everything and everyone that could not escape.”
Now I'm by no means dogmatic about this & to be honest God could have used a non-natural explanation method to punish--but when I read your post--I had to laugh--b/c my wife who is in the class that I teach actually preferred the asteroid theory--despite my attempts to defend the earthquake theory--lol

God has used natural disasters as a means of destruction before. Think of the flood back in Genesis.
The Bible says:
Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven; 25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.
Gen 19:24-25 (KJV)
I think it is possible that God used one or more asteroids to destroy these cities.

20 And the LORD said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous;
Gen 18:20 (KJV) The sin of sodom was very great. So much so that God would tolerate it no longer.

49 Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. 50 And they were haughty, and committed abomination before me: therefore I took them away as I saw good.
Ezek 16:49-50 (KJV)

There is supposedly a big asteroid headed this way. Perhaps God will use it to whack a people that are championing Sodomites and the offering of unborn children to "Qetesh".

This bears repeating.
