Detroit Tiger, Curtis Granderson gets runner-up for Web Gem of the Year

    Baseball Tonight had their year end show last night, and they did the top Web Gems by each position and then the Top 10 overall. Granderson's catch over the fence against Boston's Willie Mo Pena was no. 1 for CF's and no. 2 overall. I think he got "robbed" - he should have been no. 1. They gave it to Salazar of Arizona, but I don't think his was nearly as impressive. Granderson covered more ground and jumped just as high or higher as Salazar. If anything, I thought Kenny Lofton's play (when with Texas) was on par with Granderson's, but Lofton finished no. 3 overall.

    Thank goodness someone from the Twins didn't win especially if they had a catch while at home. :saint:

    The Twins are irrelevant to me anymore. In fact, I predict they finish last in the AL Central next year. My new favorite "lucky" team to hate is the Indians. The Indians were definitely lucky in 2007. Their pythagorem W/L record was 91-71, while the Red Sox were 101-61. So the Sox were clearly the superior team. And the Indians were only 2 better than the Tigers who had a pyth. W/L of 89-73.

    However, the one sweet thing about this year is that I went to 3 Tigers/Indians games and the Tigers went 2-1 (which is ironic, since they went just 6-12 overall against the Tribe). Just knowing that either one of those wins I witnessed kept the Indians from having home field over the Red Sox (and likely keeping them out of the World Series) is enough to keep me smiling until next season. ;)

    Envy doesn't become you, Andy :) You believe any team that bests the Tigers is lucky :laugh:

    Wanna talk unlucky? Look at my Reds and their new manager. I'm still waiting for a reason not to believe the Reds will be worse next year, and that Aaron Harang's arm will fall off during spring training, given Dusty Baker's propensity to ruin pitchers.

    Curtis Granderson is my favorite player. I have Tigers jersey with last name -'Granderson', and number 28.

    Curtis is not a powerful slugger. But, he can do everything in his ability. His ability really amazing me. He's only in his second season already. He will playing next third season in 2008. . He already became the only FOURTH player of MLB history for made attempt of over 20's HR's, over 30's doubles, over 20's triples, and over 20's stolened bases in a same season! Not only his ability of hitting and running. Also, he played great defense out in the centerfiled. I watched him chased ball so fast over the field, and I did saw him jumped and strecthed his arm over the wall and caught ball from home run. Wow! He ran toward left field from center field for reacyhed fly ball over the fence, and he made catch the ball at Comerica Park. Wow! And I did saw him slided on the ground for caught fly ball several times.

    I am no doubt, He would be another "Willie May" next season, and coming years from now. I would not be surprise, next year, he would hit over .300 average, 30 home runs, 30 doubles, 100 RBI's, 30 stolened bases, and possible over 20 triples. Ever you hear a MLB player who ever make .300 average, 30 home runs, 30 doubles, 20 triples, 20 stolened bases in a season of MLB history? I don't think there is a player did it. Curtis could becaome the first ever player to attempt them all in the same year. That would be NICE for him to win MVP next year. But, I doubt that, he will win MVP next year. But, I am expecting that, he will make to 2008 All-Star Game for sure.

    You better watch out on him next year.

    By the way, often, I read Detroit newspaper, in the Sports. It often mentioned on A-Rod, Tigers are considering to buy him.

    A-Rod for Tigers? No, we do not need him. Tigers is already a good year. They just having a bad month last August, because of injuries. Next year, Tigers will be doing fine, and possible to win division and enter playoff.

    GO TIGERS!!!

    That catch over the fence was the one that got runner-up for Web Gem of the Year. He is a special player.

    I think getting A-Rod would be a mistake for the long-term (although it could help in the short term). We need better pitching, not hitting.

    Well, not quite. I never said the Cardinals were lucky last year. The Yankees weren't lucky this year when they beat the Tigers out for the wild card. But the Indians were definitely lucky in '07. They were lucky in that they got a lot of breaks (what I call dumb luck). But they were also lucky in that they made their own luck - i.e., they played way over their heads. For the latter, I give them all the credit. The "dumb luck" aspect only makes a difference of about 5 games over the course of the year (of which the Pythagorem record attests). But they also created their own luck by playing so well together, having few injuries, and several players putting together career years. I'd be surprised to see the following players repeat what they did in '07: Carmona, Sabathia, Byrd, Betancourt, Perez, Martinez, Garko, Peralta, Blake. They also had great role players that had timely hits throughout the year.

    I give them credit for taking a team that should have only won about 80-85 games and taking them to the brink of the World Series.

    I thought I had heard you say you thought the Cards were lucky last year. But anyway, I agree with you about the Indians. That team should've been a .500 team, and they were one win away. It was nice to see someone challenge the Sox and not just coronate them. The Angels rolled over and the Yanks just had nothing left.

    The major flaw of Pyth wins is that it forgets that Baseball is not played in microchips but on a diamond. It gives us wonks something to talk about, though.

    Contrary to many baseball fans, I've said all along that the Cardinals were a good team, despite their record. I've heard so many people bemoan the fact that a 83-79 team won the W.S. I always point out that essentially the same Cardinals team won over 100 games in '04 and '05, and they started on a tear in the first couple of months in '06. But then they had some injuries (Pujols most notably) and they struggled after that. Right at the end of the season they got healthy and began playing like the '04-'05 Cardinals in the playoffs.

    The only way the Cardinals were lucky was how the Tigers completely choked. My only regret last year was that the Tigers didn't even make it a series with their awful play. The way the Cards were playing, I'm not sure the Tigers could have won, but they should have at least taken it to 6 or 7 games. Oh, and the Tigers layoff helped the Cardinals, too, so I guess they were lucky. :) The Tigers were the better team, no doubt, but I think the Cardinals are a worthy champion (unlike the '87 Twins).

    Speaking of the long layoff, it looks like the same thing is happening to the Rockies. This really stinks, and baseball needs to fix it. I realize they can't, though, because TV controls all. The ALCS should have started earlier and ended sooner. Same with the W.S.

    Last year, Tigers could have win W.S. without attempting too many errors. Too many errors hurted Tigers. I know Tigers CAN beat Cardinals for sure. But, they made too many errors.

    This year, Tigers beat Cardinals by swept the series. I went to Tigers game, they beat Cardinals I think score was 13-1 on Friday night. Tigers got 10 runs in the third inning against them. I guess it was a revenage game. Huh?

    Next year, I would like to see Tigers keep their pace throughout season to make playoff and win division, and hope win W.S.

    Tigers had a bad month in August this season, that why they were elimated from playoff.

    Secondly, Tigers have many injuries this season, hurt their chnace for making playoff.

    I hope, next season, they will reduce theiinjury players, and having a good health team, so, they shall be able to keep their pace throughout season to make playoff and win division. I know they CAN DO IT!

    Tigers having a excellence hitting team. But, they need focus on pitching team more, they need improving.

    I hope Tigers will win division, and win W.S. next year.
