As a pastor, Do you have a devotional time, a time with just you and your God and no outside distraction, not for your sermon preparation, but a time for introspection and spiritual growth? If you have such a time, how do you spend it?

Yes. Every morning I read four chapters in the Bible, pray for everyone I know, and translate two verses from the Greek into Japanese. That last may take up to 15 minutes just for my rough draft if they are difficult verses, but it is a great blessing (as are the first two stages).

Every morning my wife and I divide a stack of missionary prayer cards and pray for missionaries. Then we each have our own Bible reading. I usually read a short passage from an OT poetic book.

I also highly recommend family devotions. The wife and I read a chapter from the Word every morning, read "Our Daily Bread," sing a hymn and then pray together. What a blessing!

I don't know how I could get through the day without these times with the Lord.

I meet each morning at 5:AM with my Lord and an open Bible. I read a few select verses, and let them speak to me quite apart from what I have studied. My prayer time is personal and I do not include others needs. This is my personal time. Sometimes I just stand and stare out the window, contemplating what shape my life should take. As my statement says, "......sometimes we leave our prayer before the Lord has time to speak...."

    Cheers,

    Jim
