I say no. I would have:

    1. Fired and Banned for life all of the players involved in the brawl.

    and

    2. Banned for life every fan who was throwing chairs and beers at the players.

I also noticed that he didn't really explain what, if anything, he was going to do with the fans who were equally acting like thugs. It almost sounds as if they are going to get off scott free.

I think he stopped just short of dropping the nuclear bomb on their careers, and think it is not enough. Hopefully, the lawyers and local prosecuters make up for what Commissioner Stern failed to do today. What do you guys think?

I think the Commissioner made a good ruling.

If any of the fans sue any of the players, then the players should sue whoever was in charge of security for not protecting them from having all of that stuff thrown on them(what if someone had thrown a knife? - someone did throw a chair). I wouldn't doubt that the fans involved in throwing and receiving punches might sue whoever was in charge of security as well.

Hopefully, the civil authorities in that jurisdiction will identify as many fans as possible who threw things and threw punches, and prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law.

I like my idea better. Ban them all for life.

I've promised myself never to go to
    Detroit or Michigan again.
(i was there once in a flight
from Oklahoma City to Albany, N.Y.).

    I'm boycotting NBA games.
Advertizers: I will not be watching your
    NBA advertizements.

I've done what i can do.

BTW, back in the late 70s i boycotted
Florida Orange Juice because of their
    mistreatment of their spokslady:
Anita Bryant. I will still not knowingly
    drink Florida Orange Juice.
Not that it matters, exept for self-fulfillment.

I've boycotted the false prophet who
started Scienceology. He was a 3rd rate
science fiction writer who couldn't write
good enough to make a living. So he figured
out how to become a millionare. He wrote
a book on Scienceology and started a false
religion, became a millionare, and had
somebody else write his science fiction
for him. Then he died. I will not let
the science fiction of L. Ron Hubbard in
my house or his religious books either.

But he did say this - The NBA also has to "redefine the bounds of acceptable conduct for fans attending our games and resolve to permanently exclude those who overstep those bounds," Stern said.

What is unreasonable about it. What is impractical about it. I can promise you that if I behaved in that manner at my place of work, I would be banned for life from that job. Why should these overpaid thugs be any different? What exactly makes them so special?

Anyone who assaults another usually ends up in jail. They were too easy on those players involved.

Artest might well be gone for life. The Pacers were lamenting that he could not be traded to anyone before all this happened. Now I would think that it would be impossible to trade him. The Pacers have lost their money on him. I think that Herb Simon and Mel Simon should be forced to sell the Pacers. They own 300 shopping centers worldwide; they are so elderly that they have little interest in anything other than heaping up more money. They recently forced the Mayor of Indianapolis to allow them to build their new office building in a downtown park. Not exactly model citizens with high aspirations.

No, I would say that Artest's contract will be paid off and that he will become a free agent and that no one will ever hire him again, but that is just my personal opinion. In effect, he will be banned for life.

Very few people can play basketball at their level. Millions of people can do jobs like yours and mine.

NBA players get paid millions of dollars and people pay loads of money to watch them play.

You don't get paid millions of dollars and people dont' pay loads of money to watch you work.

    'nuff said.

So, because they are millionaires, that gives them the right to be thugs? Ok, now I think I understand.

The problem with this is that if people don't feel safe taking their families to the games, there goes their millions. Most of the sentiments I am reading and hearing is saying that the NBA isn't that entertaining anymore.

And 57% on cnn.com think it's just about right or too severe.

So you are in the minority, Joseph. So there. [IMG]

At least a few sports fans expect a little more from these millionaire thugs than you do, Ken. I think we all should.
