Did Joshua conquer it all?

Good friends,
I read a promise in Joshua 1:4 that tells Joshua he will conquer all of the promised land which included all the way to the Euphrates River. Joshua 21:45 and Joshua 23:14 seem to say this was accomplished. Any thoughts?

After all, it seems like this would've been done previous to Moses' death. The 2 1/2 tribes who stayed East of the Jordan were on to conquering the West side of Jordan with their brothers by the time Joshua took over (1:12-15).

Is there any reason to doubt that this conquering to the Euphrates River was indeed accomplished and that, by the end of Joshua, The 12 tribes ruled all of this vast land?

The best I can tell, the closest point from this River to Israel is over 200 miles.

They conquered it all, but there were problems along the way.

One of the tribes tricked the Hebrews into making a peace treaty, and lived as their servants. There was some intermarrying going on. Some of the people could have fled, and then later returned to the lands and were allowed to live there.

All of that resulted in the Hebrews being corrupted by pagan worship of false gods, and ultimately led to their overthrow.

You're right about all of that....but, my question was "is there any reason to doubt that the children of Israel did in fact conquer all the way to the Euphrates prior to Moses' death?"

Joshua 1:4 seems to indicate this was done already.

Drfuss: Yes, there is reason to doubt that all the promised land was conquered. For instance, the Jebusites still controlled and inhabitated Jerusalem. See below:


2 Samuel 5:6 - And the king and his men went to Jerusalem unto the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land: which spake unto David, saying, Except thou take away the blind and the lame, thou shalt not come in hither: thinking, David cannot come in hither.


Also, what about the Philistines? Or did they come later?

Ok...

So what about the Joshua 21:45, and 23:14 references? Didn't God give them the land generally speaking, thus fulfilling this promise?
