It seeem if we are in our annual arg [IMG] ument between our Pastor and a few Christian Education teachers. The question is did Mary have a choice in becoming the Mother of our Lord and Savior?
Maybe someone has something that will convince the disagreeing parties one way or another.
    Thanking everyone in advance.

Does any one who is called or chosen of God for a special purpose have a choice?

I believe that Mary humbly submitted to God's will. In Luke 1:38 she says be it unto me according to thy word. That was her choice!

Yes. She could have been obedient...or she could have been disobedient; and still God would do it his way. Look at Jonah.

She had a choice. She didn't have a chance of disrupting God's plan. God had determined long before she was born that she would carry the Messiah.

She was always going to say yes.

    Hi everyone; [IMG]
I believe that Mary was committed to God. This commitment is why she accepted God's will. When she surrendered to God's will she surrendered her own freewill and was willing to be used by God. She still could have rejected God's will but, then her commitment would have not been an honest one. God also knew that she would not refuse Him. Jonah as well was committed. He refused God, but through circumstances God changed his mind.Jonah's rejection of God's will, is proof we have free will. Although God can and often does get you to change your mind. It's not wise to make a commitment with God and change your mind. Once we make an honest commitment to God we belong to Him. To be used by him as He see's fit. Making a commitment with God is serious business. Don't commit unless your willing to submit. Allowing God control of your life is what it's all about.God is our heavenly Father and more loving than any Father there ever was on earth. What good Father doesn't want the best for his children. When we act in our Fathers will we are bless by Him more than you can imagine.
May God bless you all. [IMG]

I think human choice has been affecting us from Adam through Mary and down to us today! But God is able to work His plans with or without our choices.

If Mary had said "no" - maybe God would have chosen another? Maybe God would have made her do it anyway, like Moses? When God called Moses, we have no record of Moses ever saying he would do it. So who knows? But we know she DID agree and everything DID work out.

Romans 9:19 Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will?
20 Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?
21 Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?

...did Mary have a choice in becoming the Mother of our Lord and Savior?

I took a quickie read throu Luke, and noticed something. After the Angel gives Mary the news, Mary says something to the affect of "I am the handmaiden of the Lord. Let it be done to me according to what you have said." That indicated to me that she chose to accept what the angel had said.

Amen. She could have done what many women do today and refuse to carry to term. She surely had a choice and chose right.

Based on that scenario, I wonder what would have happened if God had looked down through the telescope of time and had not found a woman who would not have refused Him?

Could it be that Mary did not have a choice because Mary was the only choice?... Did Elisabeth John The Baptist Mother have a choice?... Isaiah 40:3... Brother Glen Of The Primitive Baptist Brethren [IMG]

No. Mary did not have any choice in the matter. None of us do. We "think" we have free choice, but in reality the myth of "free choice" is just an illusion. There is an "appointed time" for everything (Ecc. 3). Mary's beautiful comments indicate her LOVE for GOD and it was an appointed fact that she would respond as she did. It is GOD himself who put those words in her mouth.

This is one of those foolish questions that gender strife rather than godly edifying. I am certain the individuals in your church who keep bringing it up have some moral issues in their lives that need some ministry.

Instead of trying to win the argument, perhaps you should look deeper for the root cause of the controversy, and pray for them.

I agree with AAron. Why is this an important issue with your church?

We "think" we have free choice, but in reality the myth of "free choice" is just an illusion.

I guess it depends on how calvinistic one is. Speaking from our points of view, Mary chose to accept what the Lord had to offer. From God's view, God chose Mary, knowing she would accept the responsibility.

Indeed, God doesn't want puppets, God wants persons who will follow Him freely of their own choosing.

Along this same line of thought. Did John the Baptist have a choice of being John the Baptist or not?

Please start explaining his choice from the moment he first jumped in the womb when his Mother greeted Mary.

I agree, Aaron. Kinda like the old "how many angels will fit on the head of a pin" question.

And just because some don't think this issue is important or worthy of argument or might cause division within the body, then we should mock it or ignore it? On the BB? Hardly!

Personally, I think it is an excellent question and worthy of more thought. Where does my depraved and fallen and always-choosing-wrong "free" will, controled by my sin nature STOP reigning in my body? And where does the new nature of faith and repentance that the Spirit gave me BEGIN?

As a believer, I accept God in control. Not all of MY actions, however, will be without sin even though God is in control! And Mary was no more a "saint" than Bob, right?

Or do we adopt a catholic view of some sort of spiritual super woman?

Look forward to more discussion on this topic!
