Did the DCeath Of jesus Upon Cross Show How Much we are worth, or How great God Is?

Heard it said many times that "If you were ONLY person to believe on Jesus, He still would have died for you, you are worth that much to God"

is that true? that primary purpose was that God so loves because you have so much worth in his sight?

or is it that God is so good and gracious, that DESPITE our sinful stae, sent jesus to die and atone on our behalf?
