    Help! (If you can. ;) )
    about 20 years ago I heard a tape of someone singing different lyrics to the Battle Hymn of the Republic. Much more "Christian" or "Gospel" than the original. I think the man's first name was joe.

    ( any ideas, baptistteacher? [IMG] ;) [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] )

    Is there any chance the version you're thinking of started off with, "Mine eyes have seen the glory of the burning of the school..."

    Didn't really think so ;)

    The original (from http://www.cyberhymnal.org/htm/b/h/bhymnotr.htm)

    Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord;
    He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
    He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword;
    His truth is marching on.
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on.

    I have seen Him in the watch fires of a hundred circling camps
    They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps;
    I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps;
    His day is marching on.
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His day is marching on.

    I have read a fiery Gospel writ in burnished rows of steel;
    “As ye deal with My contemners, so with you My grace shall deal”;
    Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with His heel,
    Since God is marching on.
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Since God is marching on.

    He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat;
    He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment seat;
    Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be jubilant, my feet;
    Our God is marching on.
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Our God is marching on.

    In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
    With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me:
    As He died to make men holy, let us live to make men free;
    [originally As he died to make men holy, let us die to make men free]
    While God is marching on.
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! While God is marching on.

    He is coming like the glory of the morning on the wave,
    He is wisdom to the mighty, He is honor to the brave;
    So the world shall be His footstool, and the soul of wrong His slave,
    Our God is marching on.
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Our God is marching on.

    Any of that ring a bell? [IMG]

    Never allow that vile yankeescum song to be sung in MY church. There is nothing spiritual or socially redeeming about it. :rolleyes:

    Another Memorial Day coming up (Armed Forces Day is Saturday the 17th) and will do something patriotic.

    :mad: BUT NOT THAT SONG! :mad:

    Aside from the notion that it is "vile yankeescum" (which I wasn't aware was a Wyoming cultural category!) what exactly do you object to in the song, Dr. Bob? I would have thought the lyrics would be as good a fusion of the militaristic and the biblically allusive as one could hope for. I have never heard a serious critique of it from the right (and yes, unlike massdak, I do see you as being on the right! ;) ) and would be quite interested to see what you would say.

    Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir sings a different verse on one of their CDs..I forget the name of the CD, but will try to quote from memory the lyrics...forgive me if I make a little mistake...

    Hope this helps you....

    I can almost hear the trumpet sound, the Lord's return is near
    There are still so many people lost, His message they must hear
    Father, give us one more moment, one more day, just one more year
    With God we're marching on.

    To reply to Gayla's original query, the only other Christian lyrics I know of to the tune are

    1)Say, brothers, will you meet us (the original 1850s camp-meeting hymn, attributed to the Methodist William Steffe, that the tune was created for, before the Union Army put the "John Brown's Body" parody to it); I don't have a full original text for this, but a Japanese folksong site gives these two stanzas:

    By the grace of God we'll meet you,
    By the grace of God we'll meet you,
    By the grace of God we'll meet you,
    Where parting is no more.

    Jesus lives and reigns for ever,
    Jesus lives and reigns for ever,
    Jesus lives and reigns for ever,
    On Canaan's happy shore.
    </font>[/QUOTE]and

    2)From Age to Age They Gather
    Hope that helps.

    thanks, folks, but not there yet.
    I found out from my brother that it was recorded by Joe Mulford, mid 70s, Tempo records part of Lillenas publishing. I'm headed to the Lillenas web site to see if I can find anything.
    Pete, no trouble finding the original, they're Everywhere [IMG]

    Julia Ward-Howe was not a Christian, she was Unitarian, abolitionist, and I think the Unitarians say Jesus was "a good teacher", ....

    The Unitarians, like the Baptists, are congregational in polity and affirm soul competency (if, in fact, there is such an animal as a "soul"). Some Unitarians are Christians, some are not. More were, percentage-wise, in Julia's day than are in ours. So (since I believe the Doctrine of the Trinity to be a postbiblical human construction) I would never make non-Trinitarianism a litmus test for Christianhood. The notion that being an abolitionist is somehow inimical to the status of Christian is also intriguing. Or did you not mean it that way? I think her line "As he died to make men holy" suggests she did not regard Jesus as merely "a good teacher" (though the phrase is a loaded one, since the Gospels can be read to make Jesus deny he was one). Do you not believe that Jesus was a good teacher?

    "It Came Upon the Midnight Clear" is another famous Unitarian hymn widely sung by Baptists. What others? My own favorite is probably "Now Praise We Great and Famous Men", the inclusive-language rewrite by preference.

    Oh well, there goes that idea [IMG]

    With some hymnals only 3-4 verses of each hymn are used, the cyberhymnal.org web site lists all verses. Tried [IMG] [IMG]

    Amazing as it might sound, I have never met a Unitarian/Universalist (they are classified as one denomination) who I would have remotely thought to be "born again". Not one. [IMG]

    They use some of the same language, but are a non-orthodox cultish sect of christianity that sadly still uses the christian name.

    The "Social Gospel" of the 1850's was abolition. Had nothing to do with salvation or grace. It was a utopian faith in the goodness of man that would purge society and form heaven on earth.

    Not a single spiritual aspect worth talking about. In my course on Comparative Religions, it is classed with LDS and JW's as a "cult".

    Now this particular yankeescum (all one word) song was written during the "Late Great Unpleasantness" as an attempt to put some "spiritual" justification for the aggression of the North and invasion of a free people (Confederacy) who had repudiated the Federalist Constitution and reverted back to the Articles of Confederation that saw our people through a successful revolt against Britain.

    Yes, I see God in the fires of the Union army defending Washington DC. In the forests, in the fields, God is everywhere, in everything, and everything is God.

    Kumbaya has better theology. :eek:

    Dr. Bob, I have to give you a big thumbs up on this one. [IMG] I can't get the picture of Union Troops marching through the South out of my mind every time I hear that song.

    Dr. Bob, Past History is OK, so long as one does not continue living it!

    Those who fail to learn the lessons of history are doomed to repeat them.

    Sadly, the "winners write the history", so the Union is glorified, Lincoln (one of the very worst presidents our nation has ever had) is elevated to Christ-like status. Ever been to the Lincoln Memorial for a worship service?

    And the teachers teach a political agenda of Federalism, big government, high taxes, destruction of individual and states' rights - even in our "christian" schools.

    And the music continues to reinforce this myth. :(

    Can you tell that this song really hit a "hot button" for me?? :confused:

    FYI: I did find an alternate verse in a patriotic musical titled:
    This Is My America,
    a Declaration of Dependence.
    arranged by Richard Kingsmore

    these words written by Chris Machen . .

    we must not forget the sacrifices
    made for you and me.
    For the ones who died for freedom
    and the Christ who sets us free
    Let the faith in God that made us,
    make us people we must be
    for God still marches on!

    we're planning on using that [IMG]
