Disappointing Ball Players

Some teams (Reds and Yankees) have grooming rules, no beards, long hair, or jewelry. I think more teams should adopt these rules.

 

I think what we are seeing just mirrors what we see in society in general. Believe it or not, I see a lot of the same in churches. Shorts, unshaven, wrinkled clothing, etc. Dr. Bob, I agree with you and it makes me sad. Used to make me mad; but, don't think the ones looking this way have any idea. Never forget what my grandfather told me when I was around 9 years old: Familiarity breeds contempt.

 

Well . . . It's definitely not classy. It doesn't make me mad, though. I think clean helmets would be nice though. Some of them could shave a little more, too. But, I don't have any problem with long hair and beard if it looks organized. For instance, I think Johhny Damon looks fine. I also think Pedro looks fine.

 

Is there a Biblical command to meet together in pants, clean shaven, and with ironed clothes?

 

That's pine tar on their helmets. I thought they were rusty! The players put it on their helmet in case they need more when batting and it sure looks awful!

What about those guys with long light brown hair with braids hanging out of the back of the helmet! Silly! Looks like they need some cute little ribbons!

Times have changed no big deal, the 70's weren't exactly great days of fashion. What bothers me is the level of play, did you see Manny Ramirez in left field last night? Looked like he was playing in roller skates.

 

I can't say I have any strong opinions about it, other than ballplayers, on game day preparing for 'battle,' have to be concerned about what will be going on on the field and getting ready to meet the demands and how they will adjust to unexpected situations. They can't be concerned about looking good for the camera closeups when they are soon to be sweating and dusty, maybe bleeding.

On Friday morning I was listening to a sports talk show, and after breaks they kept going back to the show with the first line from Signs... "And the sign said long-haired freaky people...." in reference to Johnny Damon

 

Thanks Dr. Bob for answering Ken's question. I've worn a moustache since 60's, evn tried a gotee this year, but always trimmed.

As a Red Sox fan, I have to agree their appearance of many of the players left much to be desired. There were several exceptions, though- Schilling, Timlin, Embree, Foulke, Cabrera, Mirabelli, Mienkiewitz(!?). It's just that the most extreme tended to catch your eye and be among the most prominent (like Damon, Pedro, and Manny).

If one looks at some pics of ANCIENT players closely, one'll see that more than one of 'em appears hung over, and cleanliness wasn't the prevailing practice in the heart of the season.

Old players often posed for pics in a clean uniform with not a hair outta place. Game pics are scarce due to primitive photography's being unable to capture the images of moving players, but if one sees any of them, one'll see that most of the players on the field weren't too neat-n-tidy.

I think Joe DiMaggio, always a spiffy dresser, began the era of "Yankee Class". For a long time, every Yankee player or coach was immaculately groomed when appearing in public.

The Big Red Machine had the grooming rules, but when free agency became easier to obtain, many a player said, "You don't like my appearance? Then I'll go to a team who doesn't care what I look like long as I can PERFORM."

As a boxer, I didn't shave for at least two days before a fight because freshly-shaved skin is more subject to cutting or irritation. As a baseball pitcher, I shaved maybe once a week because my freshly-shaved neck would break out with hives after I'd sweatted a lot...and I was a relief pitcher who often worked five days in a row. Same for me as a football player...I shaved in the shower after a game.

Thing is, if a man decides to grow a beard, he will have several weeks of appearing scruffy until he has enough beard to shape it.

I myself am not too concerned with any athlete's hair style or how much bling he/she wears.
