Do modern Christian equivalents of ancient Jewish Pharisees exist today? If yes, how do you identify them, and how do you deal with them?

Identifing them...they are more caught up in the rules than in worship
Dealing with them...not sure how to. for the most part, I ignore them trying to run my worship. I'm in it for God not for st...um, them.

Hey BrianT! I've actually thought of the folks around here known as "Apostolics" (oneness/Jesus-only) as being similar to the Pharisees...

There are so-o-o many; our parish(county) is probably 90% tongue-talkers! :( As many know, our youngest son is caught-up in this sect & he has actually told me he is without sin!

They wear long sleeves all the time & look down at those who don't. They stay at the "Tab" in constant prayer-altho' I have my doubts if it is really prayer going on up there!

I have long hair & recently cut my bangs; now my son says I'm going to hell! But the funny thing is, he already told me that, because I don't speak-in-tongues!

They break the law, such as speed-limits & hunting rules, & don't expect to get caught(they have a 'bishop' who intercedes for them.)

I could go on & on, I guess, but this is enough to give you an idea. Yes, they use the KJBible, exclusively! [That is the only way I am able to witness to them!] ;)

Yes, in my opinion, they do. For the most part they gather in what they usually call "Messianic Congregations," often wearing traditional Jewish garb, adopt Jewish traditions and customs, and generally have a "look at me" type attitide. Very similar to the Pharisees of Christ's day.

So, did Jesus come under this catagory?

    Um, no?

</font>[/QUOTE]So, then why, when some one takes a stand with Jesus and the Bible, do they get labeled as such?

They do? If you answer my second question in the first post, perhaps we can figure it out.

Rabbinic Judaism is an extension of Pharaseic Judaism; When the Temple was destroyed circa 70 CE, the Sadducees were destroyed with the Temple, or ceased to function, since their belief system and power was tied to the Temple. The Pharasees, or what was left of their sect, eventually filled this gap with what has become known as Rabbinic Judaism.

    To Justified and Brian: Yup.

Identifyin' em's easy. Wear some coveralls or shorts to church. The guy with the tie who's face starts to turn red at first sight of you is probably a Pharisee....

Hey, that could be a whole line of jokes, along the Jeff Foxworthy style. "You might be a Pharisee if...."

...the thought of someone not tithing just sets your blood to boiling....

...you kindly escorted that young lady out of the church because them there tight-fittin biker shorts just aren't the kind of thing you want seen in your church....

I'm bettin' there's a couple dozen more y'all could help me with....

Well, it would depend on you views?

If they are new Christians, then teaching them would help clear up a lot of what your talking about. [IMG]

If they are not saved, then we have to give them the Gospel and make disciples out of them. ;)

If they have been taught and reject God's Word, it just shows their rebellion and the desire to travel the broad road! :D

I've been to many different types of Baptist churches over the years and I'm sad to report that the "look at how spiritual I am" crowd comes in all shapes and sizes so to speak. Just as in Jesus day, they seem to put "rules of living" over the gospel of Jesus.

I'm sorry Doc...but you made me laugh....
In MY own personal opinion, most of them are found in the IFB churches, but that's not an attack on the IFBers, as not all of the people there are like that. It's just where I personally have run into most of them...

    DocCas ---

I am really sorry, and particularly surprised, that
you would write this. Have you found me to be
pharisaical? If I have been that way, it certainly
was not my intention. I am so sorry.

Uh, I don't know you so, consequently, I was not refering to you. I was refering to several "Messianic Congregations" both here and in Arizona. [IMG]

Well, I'm sure glad that wasn't an attack.

Didn't the Pharisees deny the deity of Christ ? Isn't that what a Pharisee is ? They put ritual and position above the true meat of the word of God. If they are around today, you may find them in a church full of rituals, like maybe the RCC, but for what I have read on this very board, I would sooner associate myself with Ernie Brazee, Granny Gumbo, Don, (just to name a very few) who actually stand up for the Bible, and not second guess what it says, then the people here who call us Pharisees. Calling IFBers Pharisees tells me that you have no idea what a Pharisee was.

Sorry, I'm not going to let comments like that one go unchallenged.

Then it is quite a blanket statement to make
against fellow believers. I assumed, be-
cause of what you wrote, that you were refer-
ring to people on this board. Many Jews are
now accepting that our Lord is the Messiah
now. But most of what I read and hear from
Christians is criticism of them. Tthat is really
    amazing to me.

I'm not Jewish, but my understanding of Jews who are saved through faith is that they are doubly blessed! Not only are you His chosen, but you're saved by faith too! I have a lot of respect for Messianic Jews [IMG]

My understanding, please correct me if I am wrong, is that once a Jew comes to faith in Christ (and is saved) then they are required to keep the Mosaic Law; in order to truly set themselves apart. Is this true?

I think I'm going to get in trouble for getting off topic...ooops...sorry [IMG]

    Hi, Mommynurse69 --

It is my opinion that Jews are not reqired
to do anything, but here is why they do follow
the Law and often more strenuously than
    before they became believers:
Because the Law stops being a 'must do' upon
the realization that only the blood of the
Messiah can save, that nothing we can do will
save us, and that the Law, as much as we are
able to follow it today is icing on the cake.
Suddenly, it becomes a delight rather than
    something that must be done.

While there are nonbelieving Jews who find
the Law, by itself, to be a delight, according to
their profession, it is the believer who finds
that they are FREE to do the Law.

I am sorry that DocCas has had the experi-
ence he has had, but I wonder if he simply
    misunderstands Messsianics. While I recog-
nize that there are overly zealous people
whose tzitzit, for example, are a cry for atten-
tion, that is certainly not the case for most.
Just as Christianity has its individuals for
whhom their real reason for doing certain
things, wearing certain clothes, etc., is a cry
for attention, I certainly would not fault all
similar Christians with being this way.

For myself, I look no different from other
believers except that the jewelry I wear may
have a Mogan David, a chai, or the representa-
tion of the tablets of the Law at times.
