Do we loudly proclaim inerrancy, and yet, ignore what the Bible tells us to do?

Bureaucracy, Reformation and the Southern Baptist Convention

Please, consider reading the whole article at the link. What do you think? Is this something that is a real concern in the SBC?

    Famine of the Word?

Oh yes, There is a great problem in the church period, not just the SBC but in all protestant churches today! I really like this quote:

"...all the calls to "reclaim America for Christ" leave me cold. Our real need is to reclaim the church for Christ. When Christ is exalted in His church, when He is loved and revered and cherised with passion by those who bear His Name--in other words, when the church starts living like the church--then His body cannot help but make an impact on culture."

    TOM ASCOL

People are starved and illiterate about the word today and are generally seeking comfort from false sources that will make them feel good right now, rather than sacrifice and yield to God and seek His face humbly and to study and truly know His word!

This is something that ought to not just concern us, but scare us.

When the resolution on integrity (presented by Tom Ascol) failed, it showed that he was entirely correct.

I once asked Evangelist B. R. Lakin about pants on women. He asked me if I would go to a ladies store and wear a pant suit from there. Before I thought, I said, "Of course not, those are women's clothes."
Then he said, "Preaching on seperation is me preaching against what I don't do and leaving unpreached anything I do."

So we SBC-ers proudly preach against liberals who deny the authority and inerrancy of the Bible and never say a word about a church claiming 500 members but never having more than 75 in church.

Think of another implication of this.

I'm 28. For the bulk of my life & involvement with the SBC, the inerrancy issue has largely been settled. Yet, I've heard countless sermons that focus solely on the inerrancy of the passage they're dealing with. In fact, I'm sure I've preached sermons that had as a main point demonstrating this or that verse is true.

But what is the cost? I was talking with a Godly man a few weeks ago about applying the Bible. He was sort of lamenting how often times our lessons and preaching don't really apply the Bible to our souls. I remarked that for my generation, all we've ever heard is "inerrancy, inerrancy, inerrancy" and we're afraid to go beyond that.

Thankfully, last weekend I took the opportunity to do just that. I taught a Sunday school class were there was nobody who didn't beleive in the ineranncy of scripture. So I started with that assumption and didn't look to prove inerrancy from my text, but focused on its spiritual application.

When one proclaims to believe the Bible and yet refuses to do what it says is a liar.

I am distrubed that the integrity resolution failed.

My reaction is: How could it Fail?

Was there any rationale why christians voted against it?

Since integrity apparently is not important, can the SBC be trusted?

    What is going on?

Also noted on Dr. Ascol's blog is the fact that he spoke out AGAINST the total abstinence from alcohol resolution. Some thought that hindered his chance of getting his own resolution passed.

Many in the church do not know the difference between gossip and just telling news. They do not recognize gossip because so many around them do it with such ease.

Sorry to bring up the KJV

Since I come from a KJV-only background, I have always had a good time asking this question to people I go to church with.

"So, is the NIV the word of God?"

    HIM: "No"

    ME: "Why not"

HIM: "Because we believe the TR is the 100% preserved Word of God and the NIV comes from another text which only agrees 93% of the time with the TR".

ME: "Do you believe the KJV to be a 100% accurate translation of the 100% preserved TR?"

    HIM: "O, yeah..100%!"

ME: "Do you understand 100% of the King James Bible English and Phraseology?"

    HIM: "Well, no"

    ME: "Maybe 3/4?"

    HIM: "Probably"

ME: "So you effectively only have 75% of the Word of God whereas someone who understands the modern day English in the NIV has, for sake of argument, 93%?"

He had to rethink his PRACTICAL stance.
