Do We Receive Faith?

2 Peter 1:1 (NASB)
Simon Peter, a bond-servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have received a faith of the same kind as ours, by the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ

How does the Calvinist and non-Calvinist explain this passage?

Peter wrote both of his epistles to the Gentile Churches throughout Asia Minor.

"To them who have obtained like precious faith with us," is referring to the Gentiles who could now be saved as the Jews.

This is the mystery before the foundation of the world that was kept secret from man, that Paul talked about.

The Gentiles being grafted in the New Covenant with the Jews.

There is a detailed account in Acts (to lazy to post) of Peter and the Jews being astonished when the Holy Spirit fell on the Gentiles and they were saved.

The Jews believed only a Jew could be saved. They didn't know any better, it was kept from them that the Gentiles would be saved.

To lazy to post Paul's account of this mystery hidden from the Jews.

It would be better for you to look it up anyway, you'll remember it that way.

Mine reads:

" Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ: " ( 2 Peter 1:1, AV ).

How I read it is as I see it stated...
Peter is addressing those who have obtained the "common" ( see Titus 1:4 ) faith, which is inherently present in all genuine believers.
That faith was through the righteousness of God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ.

Similar to the translation that you posted, "received" and "obtained" mean the same thing.

In addition, I know from other passages that my faith is a gift from God ( Ephesians 2:8 ), that my faith was authored and finished by Jesus Christ ( Hebrews 12:2 ), that it is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen ( Hebrews 11:1 ), that my faith is "of" ( by or from ) Jesus Christ ( Galatians 2:20 ) and like Paul, I live this life by the faith of ( by or from ) the Son of God...who loved me and gave Himself for me ( Galatians 3:16 ).

To state it differently, I didn't "exercise" faith to be saved;
I inherited my faith as a product of God saving me.

Now lookup the mystery that Paul revealed that the Gentiles would be saved the same as the Jews.

Eph. 3:1-6

For this cause I Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles,

2 If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward:

3 How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words,

4 Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ)

5 Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;

6 That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel:

Romans 12:3
For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.

In both cases, the faith that is spoken of appears to be given with salvation. That is because of salvation. The faith spoken of in Romans comes with the explanation of spiritual gifts and their exercise and use.
The faith spoken of here is also obtained through the righteousness of God. It could be accurately read that the precious faith they share is that faith in Christ. This would then be a different usage of the giving of faith.

Are there any other times in God’s Word where faith is said to be given?

If it is given, Jesus either hadn’t given it to the disciples or they had misplaced it. Luke 8:25

By default God made man what he is and there is no attribute or ability that man has that is not from God. (Disclaimer: sin is a corruption and distortion of the attributes God gave to man. I do not attribute corruption to God)
