Do You Memorize from Only One...?

I have a bad memory so can never remember a verse verbatim. I do however teach/preach from any version so happens to be handy (mostly amplified for teaching) but I mostly paraphrase when it comes to quoting text.

 

Since I preach (although I am not a pastor), I shall cast my vote as well

I memorize from only one book, which I am sure you all can guess.

I do however, from time to time, have to consider what I am quoting since I read the NIV for years and my memory has trouble giving it up.

 

I tend to remember the Psalms in the Miles Coverdale version as used in the Book of Common Prayer of 1662, because as a boy I sang them week after week as a member of my parish church choir. The first 4 verses of Psalm 84 in that version read:

Psalm 84. Quam dilecta!
O HOW amiable are thy dwellings : thou Lord of hosts!
2. My soul hath a desire and longing to enter into the courts of the Lord : my heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God.
3. Yea, the sparrow hath found her an house, and the swallow a nest where she may lay her young : even thy altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God.
4. Blessed are they that dwell in thy house : they will be alway praising thee.​

The same verses in the KJV read:

1 ¶ <<To the chief Musician upon Gittith, A Psalm for the sons of Korah.>> How amiable are thy tabernacles, O LORD of hosts!
2 My soul longeth, yea, even fainteth for the courts of the LORD: my heart and my flesh crieth out for the living God.
3 Yea, the sparrow hath found an house, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, even thine altars, O LORD of hosts, my King, and my God.
4 Blessed are they that dwell in thy house: they will be still praising thee. Selah.​

Now, I tend to memorize verses in the NKJV, the version my church uses.

 

I have always memorized from the KJV. I really don't read any other versions.

 

I am not a pastor, however I have been asked to fill in for the pastor during a few emergencies. As a rule, I stick to the KJV because most people are familiar with it. I mean, I think I'd lose people if I decided to memorize from "The People's New Message Living Revised Basic Teenager Study Reference Word Picture Bible 1997 Edition".

I'm being a wiseacre, but you catch my drift.

Funny, too. I grew up in the Church of Christ (aka: Better Take the Nestea Plunge or It Didn't Count). The preacher there always taught and read from the NIV, but when he fired out a memory verse, it was KJV since that was what he was raised with.

Sticking to one version has to help memorization.

 

It depends on when I have memorized the verse. Many of the verses I know were memorized in the KJV. But the verses I have memorized in the past 10 years have been from the NASB.

 

I started memorizing Scripture shortly after I was saved. I used the KJV, and have ever since. Consistency is a good thing. You become very familiar with the translation you are using, though one may refer to others for comparison. By the time I had finished college I had memorized Romans, Ephesians, James, and 1John.

 

I'm with the Squire on this one. Most of my memorizing comes from repeated reading of Scripture. I always read and memorize from the 1769 KJV.:thumbs: When I preach an expository message on a short passage by the time I am done I have it pretty well memorized.:type:
