See the topic. If you read the bible, one will notice that there is not a single instance of humor to be found - at least, not that I've found, although I'd be lying if I said I'd read all the books yet. Yet, God says that he made man in his own image, and humor is surely an integral part of human nature, something that makes life much, much better and is something that we have that other animals lack.

Now, I realize that the bible is hardly the forum for jokes, but one would think that some lighter-hearted stuff wouldn't been inserted if God's image truly paralles our own. So: do you think God has a sense of humor?

    Did God make Baptists?
If so, surely He has a sense of humor!

Yes he does. I cannot look upon my children and not think that. We are in his own image, and Laughter is one of the Emotions. If you look at it, It makes you healthier, Kills stress, Lifts your spirts, and bonds us to one another. I think maybe laughter is the Second top emotion with the LORD. Love being the top one. As usual it's JMHO.........

    God Bless [IMG]

I Kings 18:26...O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped upon the altar which was made. 27 And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud: for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth, and must be awaked.

    I thought that was hilarious.

Laughter is such a universal "human" response (more if you count Cheetah) that I can't help but think that God has a sense of humor. Although it's not like you can tell him a joke with a surprise ending or one He's never heard before

Hahaha. I bet we could come up with more than a few of God's creations that show he has a sense of humor, much like he last two posts. [IMG]

Do you think that Gen. 18: 12-15 may qualify as a sort of sense of humor with a twist of irony? [IMG] latterrain77

The Bible is not a joke book, but Jesus used illustrations from time to time that could be taken as humorous (beam in one's eye, e.g.), and there are puns in the Old Testament (in the Hebrew anyway). Also, it's hard to believe that God would create us with a sense of humor but lack the quality Himself, particularly since there is nothing innately sinful about it. In fact, a sense of humor can be very helpful in keeping a proper perspective on life.

I know God has a sense of humor because he gave the Phillestines hemorrhoids when they stole the ark.

Of all of the things He could have done to them, that's pretty funny.

We also know God hs a sense of humor because Jesus used humor when He spoke: "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to inherit the kingdom of God".

Hebrew for LAUGH = achaq meaning to laugh (in pleasure or detraction); by impl. to play:--deride, have in derision, laugh, make merry, mock (-er), play, rejoice, (laugh to) scorn, (make) sport.

Hebrew for DERIDE = la'ag meaning to deride; by impl. (as if imitating a foreigner) to speak unintelligibly:--have in derision, laugh (to scorn), mock (on), stammering.

Used 35+ times in the Old Testament.

How about the two idiots and the Hen pecked husband?

LUKE 14:17 And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready. 18 And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused. 19 And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused. 20 And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.

Who would buy a piece of land without seeing it first? Or a beast of burden without trying it first? And who wears the trousers in that house? I think faces did shine hearing it. [IMG]

    Isaiah 44

14 He heweth him down cedars, and taketh the cypress and the oak, which he strengtheneth for himself among the trees of the forest: he planteth an ash, and the rain doth nourish it. 15 Then shall it be for a man to burn: for he will take thereof, and warm himself; yea, he kindleth it, and baketh bread; yea, he maketh a god, and worshippeth it; he maketh it a graven image, and falleth down thereto. 16 He burneth part thereof in the fire; with part thereof he eateth flesh; he roasteth roast, and is satisfied: yea, he warmeth himself, and saith, Aha, I am warm, I have seen the fire: 17 And the residue thereof he maketh a god, even his graven image: he falleth down unto it, and worshippeth it, and prayeth unto it, and saith, Deliver me; for thou art my god. 18 They have not known nor understood: for he hath shut their eyes, that they cannot see; and their hearts, that they cannot understand. 19 And none considereth in his heart, neither is there knowledge nor understanding to say, I have burned part of it in the fire; yea, also I have baked bread upon the coals thereof; I have roasted flesh, and eaten it: and shall I make the residue thereof an abomination? shall I fall down to the stock of a tree?

Laughter is initiated by an unexpected response. That's why most jokes seem funny to us.
Can we suprise God? I think not! God may humor us but we can't make God laugh. We can please Him--that afterall is called worship.

That's not necessarily true. [IMG] I still watch old Seinfeld and Simpson's episodes, ones that I've seen a million times before. And yet, when it gets to a particularly funny part (that I have, of course, memorized), I still laugh. [IMG]

Homer: My name is Mr. Burns, and I believe you have a letter for me.

Post office guy: OK, What's your first name, Mr. Burns?

    Homer: I don't know.

That still makes me laugh every time. :D

Ergo, methinks we could make God laugh.

You folks tried real hard to have God laughing, but you cannot demonstrate that the Lord found any of the instances you gave in the least bit funny. I grant that some of them might seem funny to us, were they not so serious.

It might seem funny that Elijah mocked the priests of Baal. But when you consider that just a short while later he had them all butchered, it hardly seems to be a moment of comedy.

And just because we think anatomical jokes are funny, why would we conclude that God thought giving the Philistines hemeroids was any more humorous than when He gives a man AIDS for practicing sexual perversion?

We do find one instance in the Bible where it says God will laugh and anyone who thinks it has anything to do with comedy has one sick sense of humor indeed. It is in the 2nd Psalm which says,

"He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh; the Lord shall have them in derision. Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath and vex them in his sore displeasure."

As for Jesus, he is said to be "a man of sorrows and aquainted with grief." So whether or not he ever laughed, we know that His life was characterized by sorrow, not comedy.

I think one of the greatest hindrances to evangelism today is the inordinate sense of humor to which our society is given. No matter how serious or sinful a matter is, in the end it is always turned into a joke. Some preachers even intentionally use humor to soften the blow of their message.
