I hope that I'm not siding with liberals on this issue but, I do not believe drinking in moderation is harmful or sinful.

You are 1000% correct. To follow the Bible's instructions is never "liberal". To not follow the Bible's instructions may be liberal(if allowing what the Bible does not allow) or legalistic(if not allowing what the Bible does allow).

I'm confused.

What is it that you hope to find out in this poll that hasn't been discussed in a thousand threads on alcohol?

Let me the first to disagree with all the others. Any alcholic beverage is SIN! If your asking the question then you probably are asking yourself, should I have just one, or should I abstain. Let me say this, if you don't drink one you won't want another, but if you do indulge, most likely you will have two then three then a six pack then a twelve pack then a case, and then the next thing you know you are an alcoholic.

When in doubt, stay away.

The same thing could be said for chocolate covered peanuts, M&Ms, ice cream, cookies, making love, the Internet, etc., etc. etc. Anything can become one's master if he allows it to do so, with the accompanying consequences.

To say that taking a sip of beer is a sin is a sin in itself as it is calling a sin what the Bible never calls a sin.

Scripture, please.

What about those of us who drink one (or two) and don't want another?

Now, when you say "most likely, you're basing this on...?

Also, excessive drinking does not cause alcoholism, it is a symptom of it.

"When in doubt, stay away."

I have no doubts about beer or wine. It's been several years since I had a beer, but these continuing hot days are making an ice cold beer sound awfully good right now. I went to college with Maggie Coors, so a Coors light is a matter of 'old times' sake'!

HOWEVER, almond M&M's or Jordan almonds I have SERIOUS doubts about regarding my ability to control my consumption. So, generally, I do try to stay away -- well.....sort of....

sometimes.

Not as often as I should.

But stop at one beer or one glass of wine? Always. I have no desire for a second! (Looking at that sentence, it's sort of a pun -- so both meanings apply!)

Perhaps I'm missing something here...but I don't believe that consumption of alcohol is a sin. Getting drunk, driving and possibly killing someone is.
To the poster who made the assumption that one beer would eventually lead to drinking a case, that is a false assumption...
I keep alcohol in my home, there's beer in the fridge, and wine on the baker's rack.
And as far as drinking being a sin, I'd like to know the EXACT book, chapter and verse which says that drinking alcohol in ANY form is a sin...maybe I'll change my opinion then...all I've ever found was a warning to avoid drunkenness, not alcohol...

I'm one that is totally against any type of alcohol; FOR ME!!!!!!

I'm one that used to feel(?) that ANY type/amount of drinking was a sin. Somewhere down the road, though, when I tried to back my "feel" with scripture, I found I had no support; only prohibitions I found were excesses of same.

So, while I'm still against it, I now accept that it is my opinion only, not scriptural, so if you choose to imbibe then you're safe as long as it doesn't meet the definition of "excess".

I'll always remember teaching a SS class some years back, & this same topic came up, & one member was adamant that scripture was there to condemn any drinking at all. After finally convincing(?) her that such was not the case, she replied, "Well, if it isn't in there, it sure ought to be!"

This fits in with Paul's comments that any thing not done in faith is sin for the one doing it; for me it not proper for one who names the name of Christ to partake such actions. Just me though!!

I find it incredible that so-called twice born Christians, claiming to dedicate the whole of their lives to the Lord Jesus Christ, have the time of day for a beverage which has killed so many innocent people around the world.

Is it a sin? Not according to scripture. Is it expedient to consume alcoholic beverages? Not on your nilly. Would I take a person seriously when they attempt to witness to me with a tin of beer or glass of alcohol in their hands? Not on your life. Your witness would be as nothing.

That is what alcohol meant to the evangelical churches 40-50 years ago, and that is what it means to me to-day. Not a sod on earth can convince me it is a delightful beverage anymore than making one's lungs perform as a chimney is acceptable to God to demands that we present our bodies unto Him pure and undefiled.

Cheers,

Jim

I think you unintentionally make a point against your position. Until the Temperance Movement of the 1800s that was not the position of the vast, vast majority of Christians throughout church history. It is therefore, a relatively recent doctrinal innovation.

As an aside, one of my favorite scenes in John Wayne's "The Alamo" is when Wayne as Davy Crockett offers a drink to Colonel Travis(Laurence Harvey) and Travis replies, "I don't drink." Crockett, "Never?" Travis, "No, never." Crockett, "I've heard of such."

what do you mean by a Christian witnessing to you? do you mean exhorting? or did you mean it would be a bad witness for a Christian to witness while drinking a beer? I agree that drinking a beer while witnessing could be a problem. it is also a problem to drink an alcoholic beverage near weak Christians. anything to cause a brother to stumble is bad not only alcohol. would a Christian cause you to stumble while drinking alcohol?

I think it is quite clear what I said and mean. Witness with a tin of beer in hand. Furthermore, it seems somewhat hypocritical if one would not drink that alcohol openly, like at a church social, if it so correct to drink it at all. When does the bar open at church?

No, seeing someone drink would not affect what I believe and practice. I have seen it all over the years, and I am prolly more open than some when dealing with the world in all manner of faults and unacceptable practices. Remember, in your words, I am the liberal in here.

Cheers,

Jim

I would have no problem with that. In a church setting, one would be less likely to overdrink.

A quick perusal of church history would show how much the church's attitude has changed toward alchol during the past 200 years. Was the church all wet for the 1800 previous years on the subject of alcohol?

Psalm 104:14-15 (ESV)
[14] You cause the grass to grow for the livestock
and plants for man to cultivate,
that he may bring forth food from the earth
[15] and wine to gladden the heart of man,
oil to make his face shine
and bread to strengthen man's heart.
