It reminds me of that email that circulated after September 11th. It said something like, "Someone asked, "Where was your God on September 11th?" Someone answered, "He was preventing 200 people from making their flights on the 3 planes that went down, he was causing over 1,000 people to call in sick, he was causing over 5,000 to show up late for work, he was keeping two engine companies trapped in traffic jams..."

The original estimates of death that day, based on who was expected to be in the buildings hit - was over 13,000. The final count of lives lost was almost 10,000 less.

 

Yep, I like that. The next person that says to me that God doesn’t exist I’m going to find out some things about them and use that example to turn it around on them. Yep, long to hear and slow to speak with the same conclusion at the end. Good stuff Jim!

 

Interesting illustration. It does deal with one aspect of the "can a good God exist if there is suffering" problem, but it will probably get a predictable response: the barber didn't create the world that has people with dirty long hair, while God did create the world that has people who suffer.

But, as far as it does go, it's a useful illustration.

I usually respond to that with, "Actually, God created a world totally free of suffering, but Satan convinced Adam and Eve that ignoring God was more fun, and when that happened, they created suffering."

I do have one nitpick with a theological implication of this statement. It seems to be suggesting that those who turn to God will not experience pain and suffering in this life.

I do think this is a nice illustration that gets folks thinking.

I would say that the question of pain and suffering is one where it is better to allow room the possiblity that "I don't know" than to have an oversimplified pat answer that is easy to find exception to and diminishes the pain and suffering of others.
