In 1 Cor 5, Paul says we should judge those in the church and let God judge those outside the church.

Well, yes, but IMO it's more like making an observation than making a judgment.

    Matthew 7
15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.
18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

Jesus said in John 7:24 that we are to 'judge righteous judgment.' He also said we would know them by their fruits.

If what they are doing, how they are living, where they are going is contrary to the Word of God, we cannot help but see that as Christians.

When we hold people up to the mirror of God's Word, it is not us that are judging them, but the Word of God that is the judge. We are just proclaiming that which God's Word states.

We cannot judge people but we can judge their actions.

Our judgements are to be based on scripture, rightly used scripture. We tend to want to jusge based on ourselves, "I don't do that, or I wouldn't do that sin, but he does", and it goes down hill from there. Thats the kind of judging we aren't to do.

We were looking at this recently

I think one application of this verse, in this particular context, is you w ill know false prophets by the things that they say. The fruit in this case pertains to their words. What do you think?

    I agree

I agree with you Donna, we are not the standard, but Christ is the standard.

And remember, the way we judge is the way we will be judged.
