"And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, . . . And white robes were given unto every one of them." (Revelation 6:9-11).

How can it be possible to clothe a soul in a robe unless it has some kind of form? Any suggestions?

I'm not well up on this whole "soul and spirit" thing, but I think the word "soul" often applies to the person - e.g. when 3000 "souls" were added to the church in Acts, or the "souls" of them who had been beheaded, who reign in the millennium. So those "souls" who were clothed could well be ressurected (raptured) martyrs. Alternatively, it seems quite possible that souls do indeed have a "form". What happened when Saul spoke to Samuel, after Samuel was already dead?

"And he said unto her, What form is he of? And she said, An old man cometh up; and he is covered with a mantle. And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he stooped with his face to the ground, and bowed himself." (1 Sam 28:14)

Not only did the soul/spirit/whatever of Samuel have a "form", he even had a "mantle"! And then we could note that God is a spirit, and yet still has hands, a face, a back, etc...

Yes. Look in the mirror. You are looking at your soul!

The soul is the physical body in Hebrew thought. Unfortunately, Greek philosophy has infiltrated Christian theology so much that most Christians believe in the body, soul and spirit seperation of humankind.

Wouldn't this mean when the body sleeps the soul sleeps?

The soul is the eternal essence of humankind. In itself, it has no form, but takes on form. In our human existence, it takes on the form of this body and all its components.

Just as God takes on the forms of "eyes of God"; the "hand of God"; "the face of God", and other human terms of understanding.

It is the soul of man that is saved from eternal punishment, and transported into heavenly bliss. What form will house this soul in heaven is largely unknown.

    Cheers,

    Jim

The soul is the body? I have never heard any such thing, so am interested. Proof?

But enough of that. What does God say? II Corinthians 5 (my comments in bold and parentheses)
Conclusion? The soul is immaterial, without form, but abides ALWAYS in a "house" or body - physical body on earth until death, then temporary body in heaven, then in a transformed physical body after the resurrection.

Some people say that your body is a glove to your soul, so your soul shapes who you are.

I tend to think that when God said let Us make man in our image, and when God created the Host, that all Souls were created at that point, and created in the image of God.

It's important to note that the visions in Revelation were generated by the Holy Spirit for the express purpose of [communicating] directly to the author. John (or whoever you want to attribute the writing to) surely had to record many of these visions by faith, believing entirely in God's purpose for "doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness."
